Mortal Kombat 2 Actor Says His Original Death Was More Graphic

A fan favorite Mortal Kombat II character’s original death was too much for viewers to handle.

In Mortal Kombat II, the fight to protect Earthrealm continues with returning and new combatants. Johnny Cage, played by Karl Urban, teams up with the heroes to prevent the evil Shao Kahn (Martyn Ford) from conquering the world. The film is based on the popular Mortal Kombat video game series.

In Mortal Kombat II, the hero Liu Kang (played by Ludi Lin) appeared to die in a shocking scene during his fight with Kahn – he was shown badly hurt before bursting into flames. While the final version left some ambiguity about his fate by not showing a body, fans were still upset. Lin recently shared in an interview on Brandon Davis’ podcast that the initial scene they filmed was even more violent, but test audiences reacted negatively, so it was cut.

The actor revealed his character’s initial death was meant to be much clearer, leaving more room for fans to wonder if he could return. Lin explained that several different endings were considered for his character, including one where he died much earlier in the story. Another possibility involved everyone dying except for Kitana (Adeline Rudolph).

Lin explained that the initial test screening featured a very graphic death scene performed entirely by his stunt double, Tyson Tran. In this version, his character definitively died after being crushed by a falling pillar, snapping his spine on a spike. However, test audiences reacted negatively, so the team opted for a more ambiguous fate. They wanted to avoid upsetting fans of the popular Mortal Kombat character, who is well-loved in both the games and films.

Originally an arcade game released in 1992 by Midway Games, Mortal Kombat quickly became a hugely popular and well-known video game series. Over time, it’s grown beyond gaming to include comic books, trading cards, films, and television shows.

Mortal Kombat II is currently playing in theaters now.
