As a huge Lord of the Rings fan, I absolutely love Federici’s poster for The Return of the King. It perfectly captures this incredibly dramatic moment from the Battle of the Pelennor Fields – you can almost feel the tension! It shows the Witch-King, towering over Éowyn on his terrifying beast, and it reminds me of his chilling line, delivered with such certainty: “You fool. No man can kill me.”
The Witch-King wasn’t aware of who he was facing, or he might have thought he couldn’t be defeated, as the prophecy suggested. But shortly after, with some courage from Merry Brandybuck, Éowyn removed her helmet, revealed she wasn’t a man, and brought his rule to an end.
There’s a particularly impactful scene in The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King that really highlights the nearing end of the Third Age of Middle-earth. I watch these films annually, and this scene consistently gives me chills. Federici’s art perfectly captures the tension and darkness right before the ultimate triumph.
Mondo Reveals a Trilogy of Epic The Lord of the Rings Posters

As we discussed, this poster for The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King is one of three created by Federici. Each poster highlights a memorable scene from a different film in Peter Jackson’s excellent Lord of the Rings trilogy. You can pre-order each poster separately, or get all three at a reduced price. They’ll be available in full color, or as special limited-edition prints featuring Federici’s initial pencil sketches.
The poster for Mondo and Federici’s The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring depicts a scene from the movie’s opening. It shows the final moments of the War of the Last Alliance, right before Isildur cuts the One Ring from Sauron’s hand.
The poster for The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers shows the characters’ growing anger towards Saruman as they prepare to confront him. It features the line, “My business is with Isengard tonight, with rock and stone.”
The third poster features a scene from The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. You can view all three posters in the image gallery above.
