Beware, spoilers ahead for episode 3 of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 2! A new theory about the show suggests we’ll soon see another version of Kong appear in the Monsterverse. Currently, season 2 of Monarch centers around the reemergence of Titan X, a powerful and dangerous monster that broke free after Cate opened a portal to another world while trying to save Lee Shaw.
In the Monarch series, the main characters are facing increasing influence from Apex Cybernetics. The first season ended by revealing that Apex is working with the Monarch organization to study Skull Island. While their motives remain unclear, some fans believe Apex will introduce a classic enemy of Kong into the Monsterverse.
Apex Cybernetics Might Be Making Mechani-Kong
In the third episode of Monarch season 2, Tim asks May to become a spy within Apex. She’s a good fit for the job because she’d previously worked there and had recently been offered a position with the company, making it easy for her to gather information about Apex’s future plans. Though hesitant at first, May ultimately agrees to help.
Even though Monarch is being secretive about their plans in the Apex storyline, fans who watched Godzilla vs. Kong already know what they’re up to. They’re building a robotic Godzilla – Mechagodzilla – with the goal of defeating the real Godzilla and giving humans complete control over all Titans.
The Monarch series hasn’t caught up to the events of Godzilla: King of the Monsters within the established Monsterverse timeline. Considering Apex Cybernetics’ secretive research on Skull Island and how readily Mechagodzilla could be introduced, it appears they’re keeping something hidden. This leads to a likely candidate for their top-secret project: Mechani-Kong, a robotic villain originally from the 1960s King Kong films.
Mechani-Kong’s History Explained
Mechani-Kong first appeared in the 1966 animated series The King Kong Show, but he’s most famous for his appearance in the 1967 live-action film King Kong Escapes. In both versions of the story, Mechani-Kong is a robotic copy of King Kong, built by the villainous Dr. Who, who intends to use him to take over the world.
Mechani-Kong isn’t a living creature like Kong; he’s a robot controlled by Dr. Who and follows orders directly. Though he’s given Kong a tough time in their battles, Mechani-Kong has lost every time he’s appeared in movies or on TV, and has since been largely forgotten.
Even though Mechani-Kong hasn’t been in a Godzilla movie for a while, Toho hasn’t completely forgotten about him. I remember seeing him pop up in a couple of issues of The Godzilla Comic back in the ’90s, and he actually played a pretty big part in the Godzilla: King of the Monsters manga series from ’92. It’s a shame, though – as far as I know, he hasn’t really shown up in anything substantial this century.
Why Monarch Should Introduce Mechani-Kong To The Monsterverse
Bringing Mechani-Kong into season 2 of Monarch would be a brilliant surprise, revealing Apex’s true goals on Skull Island. It would explain why they were so focused on Kong at the end of season 1 and cleverly avoid the predictable reveal that they’re building Mechagodzilla.
Instead of revisiting the Mechagodzilla storyline from Godzilla vs. Kong, the Monarch series could set up an exciting third season centered around Mechani-Kong. Perhaps Apex’s fascination with Titan X and Skull Island stems from their use of Mechani-Kong as a test model – a stepping stone toward their ultimate goal of replicating Godzilla.
As the second season of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters progresses, we might learn what Apex is really up to. If Mechani-Kong appears, the third season of Monarch could then explore a Titan that fans already know from previous stories, letting the show expand on existing lore.
New episodes of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 2 arrive Fridays on Apple TV.
