‘Monarch’ Season 2 Features ‘Godzilla x Kong’ Titan Story Movies Skipped

Spoilers for the Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Season 2 premiere are below!

The Monsterverse has quickly become known for introducing a lot of giant creatures, or Titans, into its stories. Godzilla and Kong are the mainstays, serving as the foundation for everything else. It all started with the 2014 Godzilla film, which brought the MUTOs into the mix. Then came Kong: Skull Island in 2017, featuring a whole host of monsters on the island. The 2019 film, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, really expanded the universe, introducing Titans like Mothra, Rodan, and the three-headed King Ghidorah.

Although many monsters appeared in King of the Monsters, Kong wasn’t one of them. He didn’t reappear until Godzilla vs. Kong in 2021, where he first fought Godzilla, then teamed up with him against Mechagodzilla. This means over 50 years of Kong’s life – between his time on Skull Island in 1973 and the events of Godzilla vs. Kong in 2024 – went unexplored. While we got small hints about what he was doing during those years, the second season of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters promises to reveal more about Kong’s history and fill in those missing years.

‘Monarch’ Weaves a Titan’s Backstory Into the Monsterverse

The show Monarch expands the story of the Monsterverse, revealing how the organization that tracks Titans first began, starting in 1952. We’ve seen Godzilla appear more and more throughout the films, and Monarch helps fill in the details of his history. Kong has also evolved a lot in the last two movies, especially in Godzilla vs. Kong, where he claimed his place as king in the Hollow Earth. However, the Monsterverse has largely skipped over a period of more than 50 years in the timeline.

The first season of Monarch immediately connected to the events of Kong: Skull Island, showing John Goodman fleeing a monstrous threat. However, the transition of Kong from freely roaming Skull Island to being contained within an artificial dome in Godzilla vs. Kong feels abrupt. The explanation for this change is minimal. Fans will recall that King Ghidorah’s storms in Godzilla: King of the Monsters severely damaged Skull Island, making it uninhabitable. Over time, a dome was built around Kong, and the island’s condition even plays a role in Godzilla vs. Kong. Despite this connection, seeing Kong trapped in the dome feels sudden and relies heavily on characters simply explaining what happened.

Okay, so I just finished the premiere of Monarch Season 2, and it’s definitely a Kong-centric season! The show kicks off right after the attack on the Apex facility – remember that from Season 1? – and we get a lot of Kong right away. Last season felt more focused on Godzilla, but this time around, they’re really diving into Kong’s world and backstory. We even get a glimpse of Titan X, which is exciting! The action seems to be largely centered around Skull Island, and while it’s still early days, it looks like Monarch is really building out Kong’s story this time around. If you’re a Kong fan, you’re going to enjoy this season!

While Monarch probably won’t show events leading directly into Godzilla vs. Kong in its second season, it is expanding Kong’s backstory and integrating it into the larger Monsterverse timeline, creating a more connected universe. Both Kong and Godzilla seem crucial to the upcoming battle with Titan X, and the show hints they’ll have to work together to win. This highlights Kong’s significance this season, as Monarch is starting to reveal details about the Monsterverse that the films didn’t cover.
