Moana Trailer Reveals Live-Action Maui’s Powers & How Far I’ll Go Recreation

Disney has released the first trailer for its live-action remake of Moana. The original animated Moana, which came out in 2016, was a huge success, earning $687.2 million worldwide and receiving very positive reviews (95% on Rotten Tomatoes). While a Moana 2 was planned as a TV series and released in 2024, it didn’t receive as much critical acclaim, scoring 60% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Disney is creating a live-action version of the popular 2016 animated film Moana. Dwayne Johnson will return to play Maui in the new movie. The trailer just dropped, and the film is scheduled to hit theaters in July 2026 – a decade after the original Moana became a global hit.

The sneak peek focuses on Moana, voiced by Catherine Laga’aia, as she begins singing “I Am Moana (Song of the Ancestors).” It shows quick glimpses of scenes from the movie, like a young Moana standing at the ocean’s edge with waves crashing around her.

When the song “How Far I’ll Go” begins, the video briefly shows Dwayne Johnson returning as Maui. We see him quickly change shape – first from a beetle into a man, and then from a man into an eagle as he dives off a cliff. However, the clip only shows Maui from behind.

Disney is likely holding back the full reveal of Maui for the longer trailer. The recent Moana teaser doesn’t show much of him, but it does introduce the Kakamora – a group of coconut pirates. In the teaser, Moana climbs a rope on their ship, trying to get away. The clip ends with Moana singing the last line of her song, “I Am Moana.” You can watch the teaser trailer on Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s YouTube channel here:

The live-action Moana features Dwayne Johnson alongside Auli’i Cravalho, as well as John Tui, Frankie Adams, and Rena Owen. Thomas Kail, the director of the hit Broadway show Hamilton, is directing the film, and Johnson is also producing it.

Kail isn’t the only link between Moana and Hamilton. Lin-Manuel Miranda, the creator and original star of the Broadway hit Hamilton, also co-wrote the music for Disney’s 2016 film Moana, including popular songs like “How Far I’ll Go” and “You’re Welcome.”

The talented artist is coming back to work on a live-action version of Moana. Because he was busy creating music for Mufasa: The Lion King, he wasn’t able to write songs for Moana 2.

Disney is continuing its trend of turning animated classics into live-action films, and Moana is the latest to get this treatment. It joins a long list of remakes including Alice in Wonderland, Maleficent, Cinderella, The Jungle Book, Beauty and the Beast, Dumbo, Aladdin, The Lion King, Lady and the Tramp, Mulan, Cruella, Pinocchio, The Little Mermaid, Snow White, and Lilo & Stitch.

Moana will be released in theaters on Friday, July 10, 2026.
