It’s been ten years since the poorly received Fantastic Four movie hit theaters, becoming one of the most criticized adaptations of the classic Marvel superhero team. While the First Family of Marvel has been brought to the big screen several times, the version directed by Josh Trank is widely considered one of the worst superhero films ever made.
Miles Teller, who played Reed Richards in the 2015 film, recently shared his initial reaction to seeing the movie. During an interview on Sirius XM, he admitted that after watching it, he immediately told a studio executive, “I think we’re in trouble.”
The actor known for playing Mister Fantastic explained that when he was starting out, it felt like joining a superhero movie was essential to being seen as a serious leading man. He felt it was a great opportunity for him and his co-stars, praising the casting choices and saying he enjoyed working with everyone involved.
I was really surprised to hear the actor, who’s 38, say he was disappointed with how Fantastic Four turned out. He also mentioned it was a shame, considering how much effort everyone put into it. He even hinted that one key person might have been responsible for the issues, saying, and I quote, “maybe there was one really important person who kind of fd it all up.” It’s a strong statement, but you could tell he was frustrated about the whole experience.
The 2015 Fantastic Four movie earned $167 million worldwide, but most of that – $111.7 million – came from theaters outside the US, compared to $56.1 million domestically. As of today, the film has a 9% rating from critics and an 18% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
The 2015 Fantastic Four movie starred Michael B. Jordan as Johnny Storm/Human Torch, Kate Mara as Sue Storm/Invisible Woman, and Jamie Bell as Ben Grimm/The Thing. The film drew inspiration from the Ultimate comic book series, which reimagined the heroes as younger characters. Toby Kebbell played the villain, Victor von Doom, also known as Doctor Doom.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has refreshed its storyline, and the classic heroes, the Fantastic Four, recently returned to theaters in The Fantastic Four: First Steps. This new film, directed by Matt Shakman, takes place on an alternate Earth and has earned $521.9 million worldwide.
As a Marvel fan, I’m excited to report that this team is definitely becoming more central to the big picture. We’ll be seeing them pop up in the next two massive Avengers films – Doomsday and Secret Wars – which is huge. And if you missed their initial outing, Fantastic Four is now available to rent or buy on demand and through streaming services, so it’s a perfect time to catch up!
