Beyond the current wave of great new horror films, many beloved franchises are being revived, and surprisingly, a lot of these reboots are actually very good. Classics like Final Destination, Predator, Alien, and Scream have all received strong, creatively-made sequels that have successfully refreshed these older properties.
Although several horror franchises are planning reboots, The Exorcist is generating the most buzz thanks to recent news. We don’t yet know what the new movie will be about, or if it will continue the existing story or start fresh. But honestly, that doesn’t matter much right now, because the talented team now working on it promises something truly special.
Flanagan Has Assembled An All-Time Cast
Mike Flanagan, the director behind popular horror series like The Haunting of Hill House and Doctor Sleep, is creating a new Exorcist movie. Originally announced in 2024, the film is now scheduled for release in March 2027. Flanagan has also assembled a remarkably talented cast, adding to the anticipation.
People started paying attention in November 2025 when it was announced that Scarlett Johansson, a famous and successful actress, would be in the next installment of Flanagan’s horror series. While big stars have been appearing in horror movies more often recently, landing an actress as well-known as Johansson is still unusual.
While that initial casting was already strong, director Mike Flanagan continued to build an incredible ensemble, adding Oscar nominees Chiwetel Ejiofor and Laurence Fishburne. This makes the cast of The Exorcist one of the most acclaimed in horror history, and it’s a promising sign for the show for two key reasons.
This basically ensures the movie will have strong acting, even if other aspects aren’t perfect. But more importantly, the fact that Flanagan was able to get these three talented actors is a real achievement. They’re all in demand, so their decision to appear in The Exorcist shows they clearly believe in his direction.
Flanagan’s Track Record Deserves Our Trust
Even with a strong cast, the excitement around the new Exorcist series is mainly due to Mike Flanagan being involved. He’s created some of the most memorable horror in recent years, both for film and TV. His The Haunting of Hill House remains a truly exceptional limited series, and other projects like Midnight Mass and The Fall of the House of Usher are also incredibly well-made.
Mike Flanagan, a writer and director known for films like Oculus, Ouija: Origin of Evil, Gerald’s Game, and Doctor Sleep, has consistently delivered strong horror movies. Given his talent, it seems likely he’ll bring the same quality to projects based on existing stories, such as The Exorcist.
While the 2023 film, The Exorcist: Believer, didn’t succeed as the beginning of a new trilogy – leading to its cancellation and a pause on the franchise – it ultimately cleared the way for Mike Flanagan to take over. He now has complete creative freedom to reimagine The Exorcist without being bound by previous storylines or established details, giving fans his unique take on the series.
