Many filmmakers have adapted his stories, but no one has done so as often as . He currently has three adaptations in development, adding to his already impressive track record.
Mike Flanagan and Josh King are collaborating with Warner Bros. to create a new adaptation of Stephen King’s 1980 novella, The Mist. Flanagan will write, direct, and produce the project through his company, Red Room, alongside Tyler Thompson and Spyglass Media Group’s Gary Barber and Chris Stone. Alexandra Magistro will serve as an executive producer for Red Room.
Originally written in 1976, Stephen King’s sci-fi novella The Mist was published in 1980 as part of his Dark Forces collection. Set in the small Maine town of Bridgton, the story unfolds as a thick mist descends, hiding terrifying creatures. It follows David Drayton, who seeks shelter in a supermarket with his son, and must battle both the monsters in the mist and the increasingly hostile behavior of fellow survivors.
Stephen King’s The Mist has been adapted for various media over time. It first became a computer game in 1985, followed by a radio drama in 1986, which actually had two different versions.
Frank Darabont, a highly respected director known for his work with Stephen King, directed two notable adaptations. He’s famous for The Shawshank Redemption (1994), often considered the best Stephen King movie, and the moving, but less well-known, The Green Mile (1999).
So, we had a Mist TV series back in 2017, airing on Spike, but it sadly only lasted a single season. Now, with Mike Flanagan tackling another adaptation, I’m getting a bit of déjà vu. If the pattern holds, we might be looking at a 2027 release – exactly ten years after that first attempt. It feels like history might repeat itself, and honestly, that’s a little concerning.
Mike Flanagan Has Directed Several Stephen King Adaptations
The horror director gained widespread recognition after creating several popular limited series on Netflix, including The Haunting of Hill House, Midnight Mass, and The Haunting of Bly Manor. While he’s made original films like Oculus, he’s particularly known for successfully adapting well-loved, classic horror stories, and he’s currently working on another adaptation.
Despite his best efforts, the director remains deeply connected to the world of Stephen King’s stories. He first adapted one of King’s novels with the 2017 film Gerald’s Game, and then followed it up with Doctor Sleep in 2019. His 2025 release, The Life of Chuck, which was based on a novella from King’s 2020 collection If It Bleeds, received widespread critical acclaim.
As a big fan of both Stephen King and Mike Flanagan, I’ve noticed Flanagan’s adaptations haven’t always been massive theatrical successes, but King clearly has a lot of faith in him. He’s just added The Mist to his growing list of King projects, and now he’s tackling the highly anticipated The Dark Tower! We don’t have release dates for either of those yet, but word is we can expect a new take on Carrie on Prime Video around 2026. I’m really excited to see what he does with these stories!
