
Mike Flanagan is known for frequently collaborating with a core group of actors across his projects, from Hush to The Fall of the House of Usher and The Life of Chuck. This consistent collaboration has been a joy to watch over the past ten years. However, his next film, The Exorcist, seems to be aiming for a bigger, more star-studded cast. Already featuring Scarlett Johansson and Jacobi Jupe, the film has now added the acclaimed Diane Lane to its lineup.
Blumhouse, Atomic Monster, Morgan Creek, and Universal Pictures have officially announced the new cast member in a recent press release. Unfortunately, the announcement keeps details about the project under wraps – we still don’t know what the movie is about or what role the actress, known for her work in Man of Steel, will play, and a title hasn’t been revealed yet.
The new Exorcist movie won’t be a direct continuation of the story from The Exorcist: Believer. Originally, Believer was meant to launch a three-movie series, but poor reviews and low ticket sales ended those plans. Universal Pictures invested a significant $400 million to own the Exorcist franchise (according to The New York Times), and this new project, developed by Mike Flanagan, is a fresh start intended to justify that investment and improve how the franchise is viewed.
I’ve mostly seen Diane Lane popping up on TV lately – she’s been fantastic in shows like Y: The Last Man, Extrapolations, Feud, and A Man In Full. But last year, she was great in the quirky dark comedy Anniversary, sharing the screen with Kyle Chandler, Madeline Brewer, McKenna Grace, Dylan O’Brien, and Zoey Deutch. And she’s not slowing down! Besides being in the new Exorcist movie, she’s also got a role in Brad Anderson’s upcoming film, Moral Capacity, alongside Dacre Montgomery, Sofia Boutella, and Tim Robbins. I’m definitely looking forward to that one.
As the cast for the new Exorcist movie grows, we expect to learn more details soon, with production scheduled to start shortly in New York City. Currently, the film is planned for release on March 12, 2027 – though it’s a bit odd it isn’t aiming for an October release. If you’re eager for something from Mike Flanagan before then, his adaptation of Stephen King’s Carrie as a limited series for Prime Video is expected to be released later this year.
