The hit Michael Jackson biopic from Lionsgate is coming to streaming soon, giving fans a chance to watch it from home.

Michael Broke Records

Hollywood has a long history of making biopics – movies based on real people’s lives – and many famous figures have already been the subject of these films. In 2018, Bohemian Rhapsody, a film about the band Queen and Freddie Mercury, became the highest-grossing biopic ever. The movie tells the story of Queen’s success and Mercury’s life, culminating in their famous performance at Live Aid in 1985.

Despite Queen’s immense popularity, the recent Michael Jackson movie shows he remains a massive figure in music. Even with past controversies—which the film doesn’t mention—Michael surpassed Bohemian Rhapsody’s box office records and became one of the year’s biggest films worldwide.

The movie earned over $1 billion globally, with a production cost between $155 million and $200 million. It was a huge hit and marked Lionsgate’s biggest box office success to date.

Antoine Fuqua directed the new Michael Jackson biopic, written by John Logan and produced by Graham King (known for Bohemian Rhapsody), along with John Branca and John McClain. The film tells the story of Jackson’s life and career, from his beginnings with the Jackson 5 in the 1960s through his hugely successful “Bad” tour in the late 1980s. Jaafar Jackson, Michael’s nephew, stars as the adult singer in his first movie role, while Juliano Valdi plays young Michael – also a film debut for him.

The film Michael boasts a large cast, with Colman Domingo playing Joe Jackson and Nia Long portraying Katherine Jackson. Jamal R. Henderson stars as Jermaine, Tre’ Horton as Marlon, Rhyan Hill as Tito, Joseph David-Jones as Jackie, and Jessica Sula as LaToya. Miles Teller plays John Branca, Michael’s entertainment lawyer, and Laura Harrier is Suzanne de Passe, a music producer. Rounding out the cast are Kat Graham as Diana Ross and Larenz Tate as Motown founder Berry Gordy.

Michael will stream on Starz on Aug. 10.
