Michael Fassbender’s Underrated Sports Drama Next Goal Wins Coming to Prime Video

Michael Fassbender and Taika Waititi fans won’t have to wait much longer to stream one of their lesser-known films together. Waititi’s 2023 sports comedy, Next Goal Wins, will be available on Prime Video starting February 15th.

The film is directed by Taika Waititi and written with Iain Morris. It’s based on the 2014 documentary of the same name, which followed the American Samoa national football team in 2011.

In the movie Next Goal Wins, Michael Fassbender plays Thomas Rongen, a coach who gets a second chance after being fired from the American Soccer Federation. He takes over coaching duties from Tavita Taumua.

The main actors in Next Goal Wins are Kaimana as Jaihah Saelua, Oscar Kightley as Tavita Taumua, Beulah Koale as Daru Taumua, Uli Latukefu as Nicky Salapu, Rhys Darby as Rhys Marlin, David Fane as Ace, Rachel House as Ruth, Elisabeth Moss as Gail, Will Arnett as Alex Magnussen, and Angus Sampson as Angus Bendleton. Taika Waititi also appears in the film as an American-Samoan priest, though his character doesn’t have a name.

Viewers generally loved Next Goal Wins when it came out, but it didn’t attract huge crowds to movie theaters. The film earned $18.6 million during its theatrical run, despite costing $14 million to make.

Currently, the film has a “Fresh” rating of only 46% on Rotten Tomatoes. Interestingly, audiences seem to like it much more, giving it an 85% approval rating based on over 100 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes’ “Popcornmeter.”

What Does Taika Waititi Have In Store for Audiences Next?

Taika Waititi’s upcoming movie, Klara and the Sun, is highly anticipated. Based on the 2021 novel by Kazuo Ishiguro, the film stars Jenna Ortega as Klara, a robot designed to be a companion to a young girl named Josie. The story is set in a lonely, futuristic world where Josie needs help making friends.

The upcoming film Klara and the Sun features Mia Tharia as Josie, with Amy Adams playing her mother, Chrissie, and Simon Baker as her father. Steve Buscemi, Harry Greenwood, Aran Murphy, and Natasha Lyonne also star in supporting roles. Taika Waititi is directing the movie, based on a screenplay by Dahvi Waller, and Kazuo Ishiguro is an executive producer.

Next Goal Wins will be available for streaming on Prime Video beginning February 15.
