As a huge SNL fan, I’m already anticipating next week’s Weekend Update – and it’s all because of the Joke Swap! Seriously, that segment, where Michael Che and Colin Jost write jokes for each other to deliver on air, always blows up online. It happens twice a year, and judging by a look Che gave Jost during this week’s show, everyone’s predicting this one is going to be especially brutal. I can’t wait!
Saturday Night Live’s ‘Weekend Update’ began as usual with jokes about Trump and the news, but things got interesting when Colin Jost made a playful jab at Michael Che. Jost joked about Che’s movie, Hold Up, Madea Got A Daughter?!, receiving no Golden Globe nominations. You can see the moment here…
The news anchors often playfully tease each other, and this particular exchange wasn’t unusually harsh. However, many viewers – and I agree – noticed a subtle look from Che that suggested he was planning a comeback during their next humorous segment. It was a clear signal he was already thinking about his response.

It’s not clear whether Jost surprised Che by unexpectedly creating a graphic instead of the written joke Che anticipated, or if he was just pretending to be upset. Many viewers believe it was the former, with the most popular comment on the video suggesting Che was already planning a particularly cutting response for their next joke exchange.
The joke swap challenges each host to read material written by the other, completely unprepared. This usually means Jost ends up delivering potentially offensive jokes about race, and risky ones about his wife, Scarlett Johansson – the kind that could cause serious backlash or even marital trouble. Che, on the other hand, often receives jokes referencing his past relationships and highly sensitive topics like religion and global politics – subjects most people avoid discussing publicly.
Although it hasn’t been officially announced, the show usually does a ‘joke swap’ in both its last episode of the year and the season finale. The year-end episode is coming up next week, with Ariana Grande hosting the annual pre-Christmas show this Saturday. With the current popularity of Wicked, the episode is likely to be a hit, but that doesn’t really matter for the joke swap itself. Based on past years, the joke swap will likely be a widely shared and viewed video on social media and YouTube.
It’s hard to say how many more times we’ll see Che and Jost trade jokes on Weekend Update. There’s likely one more swap planned for the end of this season, but after that, it’s uncertain. Last year, there was a lot of talk about them potentially leaving, as they’re the longest-serving Weekend Update hosts ever. They returned, but haven’t said anything about their plans. I, for one, hope they continue to come back, but at this point, we should enjoy their playful banter while it lasts, because their future on the show isn’t guaranteed.
