Mel Gibson’s ‘Passion of the Christ’ Sequel Is Making Surprising Recasts Ahead of Filming

The anticipated sequel to Mel Gibson’s *Passion of the Christ* is taking an unexpected turn by reportedly not including any of the original actors. For two decades, the follow-up to Gibson’s 2004 film has faced delays, partly due to Gibson’s personal issues, including a DUI and statements considered homophobic and antisemitic.

Despite rumors that Jim Caviezel would reprise his role as Jesus, and Monica Bellucci return as Mary Magdalene, Page Six reports that the film will feature a new cast. Production is scheduled to begin soon in Rome, according to a source.

I’m hearing they’re actually on location in Rome right now, meeting with potential cast members. It sounds like getting the original actors back was a real challenge – a lot of complex digital work would have been needed, not to mention just coordinating everyone’s schedules. Apparently, there was quite a bit of negotiation and reworking involved to make it happen.

I remember when the first movie came out – everyone was talking about it, and not always for good reasons! But it was a huge success, making over six times its production cost – $610 million from a $30 million investment. Now, after more than 20 years, the sequel is coming, and I have a feeling it’s going to stir up just as much controversy. Honestly, that’s probably a good thing – it could be Mel Gibson’s biggest film in a long time, and I’m excited to see how people react.

‘The Resurrection of the Christ’ Will Be Spread Over Two Movies

Given the potential success of a Jesus Christ film by Mel Gibson, a second movie is now in the works. Officially titled *The Resurrection of the Christ Part One*, the first film is set to premiere on March 26, 2027 – a significant religious date marking the anniversary of Christ’s death. *Part Two* will follow just 40 days later, on May 6, 2027, coinciding with Ascension Day. While filming was initially planned for August 2024, it appears to have been postponed, possibly while the filmmakers search for new actors.

Many people are questioning whether we need another film about Jesus, especially one – or two – directed by Mel Gibson. However, Lionsgate seems confident in his ability to bring audiences back to theaters. It’s been twenty years since Gibson’s last film, and viewing habits have changed drastically with the rise of streaming. It remains to be seen if *The Resurrection of the Christ* can attract enough moviegoers to boost box office numbers in spring 2026, but the combination of a director known for controversy and a sensitive subject is guaranteed to generate discussion.
