Developer vedinad announced on the official Megabonk Twitter/X account that the game is withdrawing from the Best Debut Indie Game category at The Game Awards 2025. This was Megabonk‘s only nomination.
The developers have withdrawn from The Game Awards because Megabonk isn’t their first game. They’ve actually created games before under other names, meaning this isn’t their debut title.
It doesn’t seem like these factors are important to The Game Awards, considering Dispatch is also nominated in the same category. Dispatch was created by experienced developers, suggesting the nomination is based on the developer’s own preference.
Megabonk Pulling Out Of The Game Awards Is A Big Deal
Megabonk is a 3D survival shooter similar to Vampire Survivors. It became very popular in 2025, receiving positive reviews and peaking at over 100,000 concurrent players on Steam. Though not the year’s biggest game, Megabonk was a successful title and deserved consideration for The Game Awards. A nomination might have increased the game’s visibility even further.
A developer withdrawing their game from consideration at The Game Awards could significantly change how these events are handled in the future. While studios generally appreciate award nominations, a refusal to participate could become a new way to voice concerns about industry issues.
