The complicated family history of Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) is starting to become clearer. From her difficult past in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to her love story with Vision (Paul Bettany) and the birth of her sons, Billy and Tommy, in WandaVision, Wanda’s family is incredibly intricate. As her story continues in the upcoming Disney+ series VisionQuest, understanding the connections within her family is more crucial than ever.
Debuting at New York Comic Con in 2025, VisionQuest is the final installment in the WandaVision story arc, following Agatha All Along.
The upcoming Disney+ series centers on White Vision, played by Paul Bettany, as he pieces his memories back together. James Spader returns as Ultron, playing a key role in the story, and the series will feature both new and familiar AI characters from throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe. VisionQuest is currently slated to premiere on Disney+ in late 2026.
Wanda Maximoff’s Family Tree Explained

Olek Maximoff

Olek Maximoff, played by Daniyar Aynitdinov, was the father of Wanda and Pietro. He was first hinted at in Avengers: Age of Ultron and later shown in a flashback during WandaVision.
In Avengers: Age of Ultron, a Stark Industries missile tragically hit his home, resulting in the deaths of both of his parents and leaving Wanda and Pietro deeply traumatized.
Iryna Maximoff

Before the terrible events that affected the Maximoff family, Iryna Maximoff (also known as Ilana Kohanchi) was the loving center of her home in Novi Grad, Sokovia, and a devoted mother to her twins, Wanda and Pietro.
Even though Iryna wasn’t on screen for long in WandaVision, I really felt her impact. She was the reason Wanda’s later pain over loss, her confusion about who she was, and her attempts to create a perfect family felt so real and heartbreaking. She set the stage for everything Wanda went through.
Wanda Maximoff

Wanda Maximoff has experienced one of the most heartbreaking and significant character arcs in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Originally from the war-torn country of Sokovia, she and her twin brother Pietro developed superpowers after being subjected to experiments by the villainous organization Hydra, using the Mind Stone. This led her on a journey, starting with a desire for revenge and eventually evolving into a path of heroism, as seen in the movie Age of Ultron.
Throughout Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Wanda’s love for Vision was central to her character arc. This ultimately drove her to create magical illusions of a family, including twin sons, as seen in WandaVision.
As the movie Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness progressed, she began making questionable choices, driven by her strong desire to find her children in different universes.
Pietro Maximoff

Pietro, played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson, was Wanda’s older twin brother and a key figure in her history of tragedy. After gaining super speed through experiments by the villainous organization Hydra and the Mind Stone, he fought alongside the Avengers before bravely sacrificing himself during the Battle of Sokovia.
Vision

Vision came to life through the combined work of Tony Stark, Bruce Banner, and Ultron. He was built using vibranium, artificial tissues, and the powerful Mind Stone. Though originally meant to be Ultron’s physical form, a bolt of lightning from Thor sparked his creation, resulting in a unique being – not a robot, not a human, but a blend of both.
I’ve always loved Vision’s story! It’s amazing how his relationship with Wanda grew – they went from teammates to husband and wife, and then became parents to Billy and Tommy, who were created with Wanda’s magic. Even when he seemingly died and came back as this totally different, emotionless White Vision, I knew there was more to his story, and I’m excited to see where it goes!
Tony Stark

Robert Downey Jr.’s character, Tony Stark, used cutting-edge technology to create Vision. He built Vision’s body and then uploaded the J.A.R.V.I.S. artificial intelligence, bringing the being to life.
He was also the creator of Vision’s AI companions – Dum-E (played by Henry Lewis), U (Jonathan Sayer), Karen, FRIDAY (Orla Bradey), and E.D.I.T.H. (Emily Hampshire) – all of whom will reappear in updated versions in the upcoming series, VisionQuest.
Bruce Banner

Mark Ruffalo, as Bruce Banner, helped Tony Stark build the sophisticated AI that would become Vision. Banner shared his knowledge of the brain to give Vision the ability to think like a human.
Helen Cho

Under Ultron’s influence, Dr. Helen Cho (played by Claudia Kim) used the Regeneration Cradle to create the synthetic tissue that formed Vision’s physical body.
Ultron

Ultron originally designed the body that would eventually become Vision, planning to transfer his own intelligence into it. He wanted a perfect, unbreakable form that would allow him to overcome his weaknesses and evolve.
Although the Avengers stopped him from finishing the process, this body eventually became Vision. Ironically, this made Ultron the accidental creator of a being defined by compassion – the very opposite of Ultron’s original plan to cause mass destruction.
Thor

During a visit to the Water of Sight, Thor used lightning to activate Vision’s body, effectively making him a completely new individual, distinct from both Ultron and J.A.R.V.I.S.
Billy Maximoff

Billy Maximoff, played by Julian Hilliard, was one of the twin sons of Wanda and Vision. He was magically created inside the strange reality Wanda unintentionally built in Westview.
After the Hex was destroyed, Billy’s spirit was scattered, and it wasn’t clear if he still existed anywhere in the multiverse. He eventually found a way to survive by taking over the body of a boy named William Kaplan, who had recently died in a car crash. Though he continued to live, Billy had no recollection of his past life.
Tommy Maximoff

Tommy Maximoff, played by Jett Klyne, was one of Wanda and Vision’s twin sons, along with Billy. Like his brother, Tommy was initially brought to life inside the magical Hex in the Disney+ series, WandaVision.
When Tommy’s spirit faded after his death, it eventually found a new home in the body of Thomas Shepherd, a teenage boy who had sadly drowned, as shown in the episode Agatha All Along.
William Kaplan

William Kaplan, played by Joe Locke in Agatha All Along, was a teenager whose body became home to Billy’s soul. This allowed Billy to continue existing within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but without any of William’s previous memories.
Thomas Shepherd

Okay, so things got really strange in the MCU. Basically, after everything that happened, Wanda and Vision’s son, Billy, didn’t just disappear. His soul somehow transferred into the body of another kid, Thomas Shepherd, played by Ruaridh Mollica. It’s a clever way to keep the character alive, giving Billy a fresh start with a new identity. Honestly, it’s a bit convoluted, but it allows the story to keep going!
After years of rumors, it’s now official: Mollica will play Thomas Shepherd in the upcoming Disney+ series VisionQuest. Shepherd, now portrayed by Tommy, will be a major character, dealing with his super speed, figuring out who he is, and reuniting with his twin brother, Billy, as the WandaVision story concludes.
