In one of the upcoming MCU movies, viewers will be treated to a unique experience – a montage focusing on villains for the very first time. Although montages have been used occasionally within the MCU, they’ve not been a common filmmaking approach throughout Marvel Studios’ 17-year run. Given the studio’s recent struggles critically and financially, it appears that some fresh changes are being implemented in this new phase.
Marvel Studios’ “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” is set to debut the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s initial villain montage scene, according to CinePop who has viewed the first 30 minutes of footage. The film is rumored to include a sequence depicting the main characters confronting well-known adversaries from the comics and reenacting famous moments immortalized on the pages.
In the upcoming movie, Galactus and the Silver Surfer are set as the primary villains. However, other antagonists such as Mole Man and Giganto might also make an appearance, possibly during the montage sequence. At this point, it remains undecided when exactly this scene will unfold within the film’s duration (though we know it happens within the first half-hour).
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), there have been numerous montage sequences throughout its films. For instance, Captain America’s chase after the Red Skull across Europe was a montage scene in “Captain America: The First Avenger,” and Deadpool’s quest to find a replacement for Wolverine featured various comic-accurate variations. Additionally, the Deadpool montage contained numerous Easter eggs, and it’s likely that the montage in “The Fantastic Four” will follow suit.
The upcoming movie titled “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” is set to initiate Phase 6 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, featuring Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon-Moss Bachrach as the main characters. In an alternate reality, they join forces to combat Galactus and the Silver Surfer, who pose a grave threat to their world and everything dear to them. The premiere of “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” is scheduled for release in theaters on Friday, July 25.
Other Villainous “Montages” in the MCU
Vulture, Tinkerer & Shocker(s) – Spider-Man: Homecoming
2017’s “Spider-Man: Homecoming” might not have showcased a traditional villain montage, but it certainly didn’t skimp on delivering thrilling action scenes for the film’s main antagonists. Michael Keaton as Adrian Toomes/the Vulture was undeniably the star, with his gang consisting of the Tinkerer, portrayed by Michael Chernus, and not one, but two Shockers – played by Logan Marshall-Green and Bokeem Woodbine. As a fan, I found these characters and their scenes to be truly epic!
Primarily, these sequences portrayed the villainous crew preparing their tools and upgrading their technology for their impending heist or confrontation with Tom Holland’s Spider-Man character. In contrast, only a montage showing him tackling New York City’s daily minor crimes after school was provided to Holland.
Kree Starforce – Captain Marvel
In addition to Lee Pace portraying Ronan the Accuser, the 2019 movie “Captain Marvel” introduced several Kree army villains, with Jude Law playing Yon-Rogg as their leader. Regrettably, these villains’ malicious plans were not unveiled until near the conclusion of the film during its third act, providing limited opportunity for Carol Danvers to have her own sequence of battling adversaries.
In the movie, the scene that came closest to the moment in question was during the final battle inside Mar-Vell’s lab, where Carol Danvers removes her control chip and confronts Yon-Rogg and her former Kree comrades alone. While this fight sequence was exciting and packed with quick cuts, it doesn’t meet the same standards as the rumored scene featuring The Fantastic Four.
Thanos & The Black Order – Avengers: Endgame
In 2019, the movie “Avengers: Endgame” presented an unparalleled climactic fight, possibly the greatest in the realm of comic book film history. The Mad Titan Thanos faced off against virtually every significant character from the Marvel Cinematic Universe up until that point. Packed with smaller, memorable scenes such as Spider-Man’s “Instant Kill” and a collaborative effort by nearly a dozen female superheroes, the final act of this film came remarkably close to fulfilling all fans’ expectations.
In Endgame, there wasn’t a scene that showcased all the villains together, like a montage. The film did depict Thanos and the Black Order causing destruction while they fought against the Avengers during their battle for the completed Infinity Gauntlet. However, this was more about the villains than it was about our heroes having separate battles with multiple antagonists.
The Sinister Five – Spider-Man: No Way Home
In the 2021 film “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” there was no holding back when it came to the villains, as they brought back five notable adversaries from previous Spider-Man movies for a showdown with Tom Holland, Andrew Garfield, and Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Men. This extraordinary event in MCU chronicles was nearly perfect, but what fans are eagerly awaiting is the classic “montage” scene, which will be presented shortly.
In the thrilling finale, our three Spidermen engaged in a continuous battle with Electro, Sandman, and the Lizard near the Statue of Liberty, but this sequence didn’t truly fit the definition of a montage because it occurred simultaneously within the same location.
Deadpool Corps – Deadpool & Wolverine
2024’s movie titled “Deadpool & Wolverine” saw Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman’s iconic X-Men antiheroes facing off against a large horde of adversaries. Upon their return to their universe from The Void, they encountered the Deadpool Corps, consisting of characters like Ladypool, Headpool, Kidpool, Cowboypool, Welshpool, and even Babypool among others.
In this scene, the group’s actions resembled a montage sequence, although it was presented as a single continuous shot. During this sequence, Wade Wilson and Logan battled various Deadpool Variants in the street. While viewers had seen an entertaining sequence of shots earlier in the film depicting Deadpool’s search for a new Anchor Being, even Deadpool himself wouldn’t categorize this as a complete villain montage.
