Mayor of Kingstown Cancelled by Paramount Despite Taylor Sheridan’s Wishes

With Taylor Sheridan leaving Paramount, many viewers are worried about the future of his shows. It appears one series, Mayor of Kingstown, may have already been affected and could be canceled.

According to Puck News, Paramount has canceled Mayor of Kingstown, even though the show was performing well. This decision came from Cindy Holland, who leads Paramount’s streaming content, and went against the wishes of the show’s creator, Taylor Sheridan. Sheridan still has a three-year contract with Paramount, but is reportedly planning to move his future projects to NBCUniversal. Holland, who recently took on her current role, hasn’t commissioned any new shows from Sheridan.

Despite Taylor Sheridan’s objections, Holland canceled Mayor of Kingstown and reduced the length of its last season.

The crime drama Mayor of Kingstown premiered on Paramount+ in 2021. It follows Michael McLusky (Jeremy Renner) and his family, who have built a business around the American prison system. While the first season received mixed reviews, recent seasons have been highly praised, with season 4 earning a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes – a rare accomplishment.

Taylor Sheridan has several upcoming projects, including the Yellowstone spin-off Marshals and a new series called The Madison. He’s also celebrating the success of Landman, which recently finished its second season. Despite some criticism, Landman proved incredibly popular, attracting 1.3 billion minutes of viewership in the week of January 3, according to Puck.

Neither the show’s star, Renner, nor its creator, Sheridan, have spoken publicly about the cancellation. Renner, famous for playing Hawkeye in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, will reprise his role as Mike McLusky for a fifth and final season, now consisting of just eight episodes. While a release date hasn’t been announced, fans of the crime drama are understandably disappointed.

Even though Mayor of Kingstown didn’t last as long as fans hoped, Taylor Sheridan has plenty of other shows to enjoy. These include Yellowstone and its spin-offs, like Landman and Tulsa King. Plus, two more series, The Madison and Marshalls, are coming out this year.
