Maul: Shadow Lord Trailer Reveals New Star Wars Animated Series First Look

This Thursday, Lucasfilm and Disney+ unveiled the official trailer for the new animated series, Maul: Shadow Lord. The series marks the return of Maul – previously known as Darth Maul, a Sith apprentice – to the screen after a four-year absence, following the conclusion of Star Wars: The Clone Wars in 2020.

The trailer announces that Maul: Shadow Lord will premiere on Disney+ on April 6th, giving Star Wars fans a date for the new animated series.

The final episodes of Star Wars: The Clone Wars showed Darth Maul escaping after being defeated by Ahsoka Tano, Anakin Skywalker’s apprentice. This explained how Maul survived the Jedi Purge and likely led to his eventual leadership of the Crimson Dawn criminal organization, which was featured in Solo: A Star Wars Story.

Following the success of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, it’s fitting that Dave Filoni—the showrunner personally chosen by George Lucas—created Maul: Shadow Lord. Sam Witwer, who previously voiced the character Maul in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Star Wars Rebels, and even made a brief vocal appearance in Solo: A Star Wars Story, reprised his role for Maul: Shadow Lord.

I’m really excited about the animation style for this new series – it’s going to have that fantastic look of Star Wars: The Clone Wars but with some fresh, updated touches. Lucasfilm Animation is handling it, and it’s in great hands creatively. Matt Michnovetz is leading the writing team, while Brad Rau is the supervising director. Both of them, along with Dave Filoni and Athena Yvette Portillo, are also executive producing, which is a solid group of talent behind the scenes.

Darth Maul Returns In Maul: Shadow Lord

Details about the story of Maul: Shadow Lord have been scarce so far. We know Darth Maul is back, and joining him are Marrok, an Inquisitor, and a young Twi’lek who becomes his new apprentice. The latest trailer suggests this Twi’lek was once a Jedi Padawan who survived the Jedi Purge. The trailer also hints at another character with connections to the criminal underworld of Star Wars.

Continuing the stories from popular shows like Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Star Wars Rebels, and Star Wars: The Bad Batch, Maul: Shadow Lord promises a darker exploration of the Force than what fans have seen before.
