Matthew Rhys, known for his role in The Americans, has found success in several television shows, including a recent Netflix limited series.
Katie Dippold, the writer behind Parks and Recreation, has created a new series called Widow’s Bay. Hiro Muray, an Emmy Award-winning director known for his work on The Bear and Mr. & Mrs. Smith, is directing. Apple TV+ announced the show will premiere on April 29, 2026, over a year after it was first revealed in September 2024.
The new ten-episode series will debut with three episodes on April 29th. Following that, new episodes will be released every Wednesday, with the first season concluding on June 17, 2026. Alongside the announcement of the release date, Apple TV+ shared the first image of Matthew Rhys as Mayor Tom Loftis, shown seated at his desk and holding a folder.
The story, Widow’s Bay, is set in a charming small town on an island 40 miles off the New England coast. The setup hints that a mysterious danger lies hidden there.
I’m really intrigued by this new film! It centers around Mayor Tom Loftis, played by Matthew Rhys, who’s trying so hard to save his town, but it’s an uphill battle. The place is practically cut off from the modern world – no wifi, terrible cell service – and the residents are steeped in old beliefs, convinced their island is cursed. What I find fascinating is that he needs their respect, but they see him as weak and, honestly, the story admits he kind of is. It sounds like a really compelling character study.
Loftis is driven to create a good life for his son and transform the island into a place people want to visit. Surprisingly, he manages to attract tourists. However, the islanders’ warnings prove correct: after years of peace, the strange and unbelievable events from old stories begin to reappear.
The new ten-part series combines scary moments with humor focused on its characters. Rhys leads the cast, which also features Kate O’Flynn (known from My Lady Jane), Stephen Root (King of the Hill, Barry), Kingston Rumi Southwick (Presumed Innocent), Kevin Caroll (Road House), and Dale Dickey. Murai is also an executive producer through his production company, Chum Films.
Matthew Rhys’ New Apple Series Comes After Major Netflix Success
2025 was a fantastic year for Matthew Rhys fans. He appeared in the psychological thriller The Beast in Me, alongside Claire Danes. The show launched on November 13th and quickly gained popularity on streaming platforms.
While currently labeled as a limited series, the creator of The Beast in Me, Howard Gordon, has hinted at the possibility of continuing the story. He suggests there’s potential for more, though no official announcement has been made. The show’s continued popularity – it’s remained in the viewing charts for weeks – may support the idea of a continuation.
Widow’s Bay will premiere on Apr. 29, 2026. The Beast in Me is streaming on Netflix.
