Many celebrity marriages don’t last, but actor Matthew McConaughey and his wife, Camila Alves McConaughey, have built a strong relationship. They’ve navigated a big move, launched a tequila brand (even embracing a no-pants lifestyle!), and raised three children together. McConaughey recently shared what he believes is the key to their success, though I’m not entirely convinced by his explanation.
I have nothing against Matthew McConaughey or his wife, Camila Alves – their first meeting was actually really sweet. He’s talked about how they’ve built a warm, family-centered home life, incorporating Brazilian customs as they raise their children. They’ve been together for almost twenty years and married for over thirteen. But I disagreed with his recent comment that a queen-sized mattress is what holds their relationship together.
The actor’s latest book, *Poems & Prayers*, features a poem that I found particularly striking. It reads as follows:
One of the best things you can do for your marriage is surprisingly simple: swap your king-size bed for a queen-size one. It might sound odd, but it can really make a difference!
Matthew McConaughey has a valuable collection of properties, including a house with six bedrooms in Hawaii and a seven-bedroom home in Austin, Texas, which holds special meaning for him. While he and his wife, Camila Alves, certainly have enough space to each have their own room, they prefer to share a bed. That’s just how they like it.
McConaughey shared this perspective in a recent Fox News interview promoting his new release, which is available with free shipping for Amazon Prime members.
I woke up one morning and realized how far away my wife, Camilla, was in bed – it felt like a huge distance! Then at night, when you want to cuddle, we had to practically reach across the bed to cover each other. It was ridiculous! We had a king-size bed, and it was actually hurting our marriage. It was too big! So we switched to a queen size, and now we’re close enough to touch, shoulder to shoulder. Honestly, it’s made a big difference – it’s good for our relationship.
I got married in the same year as that actor and his wife, and I think upgrading to a bigger bed really helped our marriage too. My husband and I both move around a lot in our sleep, and we tend to get hot easily. I see my husband plenty during the day, so I really appreciate having my own space at night. Honestly, if I had as many bedrooms as McConaughey, I’d probably take a separate one!
It’s sweet how much this man enjoys being with his wife – he really doesn’t like being apart from her, even a little. I’m not criticizing his preference at all, and I believe in trying things before judging. However, I did try a similar approach myself, and it definitely didn’t work for me.
So I’ll stick to my King bed, and I’ll hope my marriage will thank me later.
