We’re especially excited for the next *Scream* movie coming out next year! It will bring back familiar faces alongside new cast members. In addition to Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, and David Arquette returning as Sidney, Gale, and Dewey, Matthew Lillard will reprise his role as Stu. Lillard recently shared the amusing reason why his character hasn’t been in many of the *Scream* films.
Why Did It Take So Long For Matthew Lillard To Return To Scream?
In a recent interview with Us Magazine, Lillard shared exciting news about *Scream 7*. He said the movie is well-written and feels connected to the original *Scream* because Kevin Williamson, who wrote the first film, is now directing. He also recounted a humorous story about the production.
When I spoke to Kevin that day, I immediately confronted him, telling him he was being unkind. He had previously told me I wouldn’t be returning, and he explained that he said that because I kept pushing to come back while he was trying to keep things calm for everyone else.
This is amazing! Fans of the *Scream* movies have long speculated that Stu Macher, played by Matthew Lillard, could still be alive, but the films haven’t addressed it. It’s ironic that Lillard and the fans *wanting* him to return might have actually made it less likely to happen!
Matthew Lillard Has Been Claiming Stu Is Alive For Ages
Matthew Lillard has long been a fan favorite in the *Scream* movies, and he’s been asked about a potential return of his character constantly – reportedly around 1,000 times a day since the original film! He’s often hinted over the years that he believes Stu actually survived the first movie. Now, after three decades, fans will finally find out if he was right. Here’s how Lillard reacted when he was finally asked to reprise his role.
I was incredibly excited and nervous. I’d been jokingly suggesting that Stu was still alive, even though he went to prison, and that’s why I was getting in such good shape – like I’d spent the last twenty years locked up. The filmmakers at Radio Silence also hinted at Stu’s survival throughout the movies, leaving clues for fans.
The next installment in the *Scream* series, *Scream 7*, marks a change in creative leadership. While previous films were directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin & Tyler Gillett and written by James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick, this time Guy Busick wrote the script and original *Scream* and *Scream 4* writer Kevin Williamson is taking on directing duties.
The next *Scream* movie will bring back original cast members like Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, David Arquette, and Matthew Lillard. Mason Gooding, Jasmin Savoy Brown, and Scott Foley are also returning. Joining them will be new cast members including Joel McHale, Anna Camp, Mckenna Grace, and Celeste O’Connor. The film is scheduled to be released in theaters on February 26, 2026.
