Matthew Lillard Expresses Interest in Joining DC Universe with James Gunn

Matthew Lillard is eyeing a debut, and he’s not shy about letting fans know. At a recent Los Angeles Comic-Con panel, Lillard let it be known, “I mean, I’ve wanted to be in the superhero world. I’ve wanted to be in, you know, DC… I mean, if anyone’s curious—if you run into James Gunn, I’m available.”

The pair worked together before on the live-action Scooby-Doo movies, with Gunn contributing as a writer. Lillard has stayed closely involved with the Scooby-Doo series ever since, and he still provides the voice for Shaggy Rogers in many different projects. “James Gunn wrote Scooby-Doo 1 and 2. He’s a good friend of mine. I’m hoping to get an invitation to join [the DCU], but I think it might have gotten lost in the mail,” Lillard said with a laugh.

It’s funny, the whole thing with the DC fans actually started because of a question from ScreenRant’s Joe Deckelmeier. He asked me about my role, but I made sure to clarify I wasn’t talking about the DCU! I’m doing something for another project – they haven’t revealed what my role is yet. Eventually, I did start talking about being on set – it was a really great experience.

“I’ve officially joined the cast of Daredevil for the next season,” Lillard stated, playfully adding, “and no, I won’t be wearing any spandex – I know some of you will be disappointed!” He was referencing the fact that his character won’t have a traditional superhero costume. “This role has been a long time in the making. Getting to play a superhero and be part of that universe really raises the stakes, which is exactly what I enjoy. I’m not suited for low-key office dramas; I prefer intense, emotionally charged roles. Charlie [Cox] and Vincent D’Onofrio are both phenomenal actors, and I’m incredibly proud to be joining this project.” His words reveal a sincere enthusiasm and a clear understanding of the challenges and excitement that come with being involved in such a well-known and popular franchise.

DCU Prospects and James Gunn Connections Loom Large for Matthew Lillard

Even though Damian Lillard hasn’t officially become part of the DC Universe, he’s mentioned he’d be open to taking on a role. Interestingly, James Gunn revealed that they actually attempted to work together on a DC project more than twenty years ago. Gunn shared, “Matt and I were with Warner Bros. executive Lorenzo di Bonaventura on the Scooby-Doo set back in 2000, pitching an idea for Plastic Man.” Could this finally be the time to make that casting happen?

Even with all the superhero stuff happening, I still feel a really strong connection to working with James Gunn. At LA Comic Con, someone asked me about my favorite role, and I realized something. I told them, “There’s just something about Shaggy that I really respect – a real passion and love. And honestly, the older I get, the more I realize I feel like I’m Shaggy.” It’s like, I just really connect with that character on a personal level.

I’m really excited to see that Damian Lillard is going to be in Five Night at Freddy’s 2 when it comes out this December! And if you haven’t already, you should definitely check out Peacemaker! It’s from James Gunn and takes place in the new DCU, and it’s currently on HBO and HBO Max.
