Matthew Lillard is famous for playing many memorable characters, including Shaggy in the popular live-action movie Scooby-Doo. The film has become a favorite among modern audiences, and Lillard recently shared his thoughts on a new live-action take on the story.
Matthew Lillard starred as a member of the Mystery Gang alongside Sarah Michelle Gellar, Freddie Prinze Jr., and Linda Cardellini in the 2002 film Scooby-Doo and its 2004 sequel, Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed. The show originally began in 1969 as a comedy mystery called Mysteries Five, created by Joe Ruby and Ken Spears for Hanna-Barbera Productions, before evolving into the Scooby-Doo series we know today.
In a recent interview with Ash Crossan from ScreenRant for his series Going Method, actor Matthew Lillard discussed the upcoming live-action Scooby-Doo show on Netflix. He also talked about stepping down from playing Shaggy, a role he considers one of the highlights of his career, and passing it on to a new actor.
The interviewer asked the person if they were involved in the new live-action Scooby-Doo movie, acknowledging the person is known for playing Shaggy.
Matthew Lillard: No. Those days of playing a wily teenager are well over.
I will say that I did reach out to them and say, “Anything I can do to help.”
ScreenRant: I feel like a cameo has to happen.
I’d be happy to help a new actor take on the role of Shaggy and make it their own. Being part of that franchise has been incredibly rewarding, especially knowing how much it means to children. Shaggy, for me, embodies the power of storytelling – a character who overcomes his fears. Ultimately, the show is a celebration of friendship.
Look, this role is something truly unique, and honestly, if the next actor playing Shaggy could benefit from my insights, I’d be thrilled to share them. I really want to see them nail it!
I’m so excited to hear that Mckenna Grace is going to play Daphne in the new live-action Scooby-Doo series on Netflix! I loved her voice work as Daphne in the Scoob! movie, so it’s awesome she’s getting to bring the character to life on screen. Netflix is making eight episodes, and from what I’ve heard, they’re giving the story a fresh, modern twist. Plus, the writing team is really impressive – Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg are handling the writing and showrunning, and they’ll be working with André Nemec and Jeff Pinkner as executive producers. It all sounds really promising!
Shaggy and Daphne’s last summer at camp takes a spooky turn when they investigate a mysterious haunting and a lost Great Dane puppy who might have seen something supernatural – a murder, perhaps.
Velma, a practical and scientifically-minded local, and Freddy, a mysterious but attractive new student, team up to investigate a disturbing case. This investigation draws them into a frightening situation that risks revealing hidden truths about each of them. As of now, no other actors have been announced, and it’s still unknown who will play Shaggy.
Filming for the upcoming Netflix series will start in April, and we can expect to hear about more actors joining the cast soon. As of today, there’s no confirmed date for when the new Scooby-Doo series will be released.
