Sony Pictures and Mattel Studios have hired Phil Johnston, the screenwriter behind Zootopia, to write the script for their upcoming View-Master movie. Johnston is an Academy Award nominee with a long career in Hollywood as a writer, director, producer, and voice actor. He’s also known for his work on Disney’s Wreck-It Ralph and Ralph Breaks the Internet, as well as the comedy The Brothers Grimsby starring Sacha Baron Cohen.
The movie, inspired by the classic toy that has taken people on imaginative journeys through colorful scenes since 1939, will be produced by Robbie Brenner of Mattel, along with Todd Black, Steve Tisch, Jason Blumenthal, and Tony Shaw from Escape Artists Productions.
Johnston shared that the View-Master was a beloved toy of his childhood – and still is. He loved that it allowed him to travel to different places from the comfort of his room, losing himself in the slides for hours without anyone bothering him. Now, he wants to recreate that same sense of wonder and imagination he experienced as a child in the 1980s, but on a much larger scale – the big screen, according to Deadline.
Mattel’s head of film, Tom McNulty, described the View-Master as both straightforward and wonderfully magical, explaining that it allowed users to experience a world of limitless imagination.
We’re incredibly excited to have the talented Phil Johnston, a truly gifted and imaginative storyteller, leading the creative direction for the new View-Master project. After our successful work with Todd and Jason at Escape Artists on Masters of the Universe, and now partnering with Sony Pictures Entertainment, we’re eager to update this beloved classic for a modern audience and spark a sense of wonder in a new generation.

Sony isn’t alone in wanting to create movies and TV shows based on popular toys and games. Netflix announced in October that it’s developing several projects centered around Catan – including both scripted and unscripted shows and films. Originally known as Settlers of Catan when it launched in 1995, the game is a popular strategy board game where players build and trade to create the largest settlements in new territories.
After the announcement, Asmodee CEO Thomas Koegler explained that the partnership with Netflix would allow more people to enjoy the Catan universe and experience its depth. Jinny Howe, who leads scripted series for Netflix in the U.S. and Canada, expressed her excitement about the agreement.
We understood that securing this deal would be a major turning point, similar to a successful negotiation. So, we combined the strengths of our shows, movies, animation, and games to demonstrate to Asmodee what Netflix can achieve through collaboration. Longtime fans of ‘Settlers’ are going to be thrilled, and a new audience will discover the surprisingly crucial role of trading sheep!
