Forget Barbie for a moment – another toy is getting its own movie! Mattel has revealed its next live-action film project, and it’s a bit of a surprise pick.
Tracie Laymon, the director of Bob Trevino Likes It, will write and direct a live-action movie based on the popular action figure, Tony the Tattooed Man, for Mattel Studios. The character, known for his muscular build and tattoos, first appeared in 1992.
Children had fun decorating Tony the Tattooed Man with washable, temporary tattoos. They could apply the tattoos themselves and change his look over and over again.
Mattel Studios’ Robbie Brenner explained that after being impressed by Tracie’s detailed and emotionally resonant characters in Bob Trevino Likes It, she knew Tracie was the ideal choice to develop the story of Tony the Tattooed Man.
As a critic, I really connected with what Brenner said about this film. It’s a story that feels incredibly timely, urging us to look beyond surface appearances and, most importantly, to approach others with empathy. It’s a powerful message, and one that truly resonates right now.
I’m so excited about what Nnedi Okorafor is doing with this character! I loved him the moment I heard about him – especially learning he was a toy that didn’t get to stick around for long. She’s planning a really emotional and character-focused story, mixing fantasy with a lot of heart, and he’s going to be right at the center of it all. It sounds amazing!
The filmmaker said his story shows how people can heal and change, and why we shouldn’t make assumptions about others. He believes this is a message the world really needs to hear right now, and he’s proud to be working with Mattel, who strongly support artists, on a film he hopes will inspire hope in people.
