Matt Reeves’ Batman TV Series No Longer In Development, Confirms James Gunn

James Gunn has confirmed that a Batman TV series separate from the main movie continuity, previously planned by Matt Reeves, is no longer moving forward. While Reeves successfully launched The Penguin as a spin-off show, other projects set in the world of The Batman have been cancelled, including a highly anticipated series about Arkham Asylum.

DC Studios head James Gunn recently confirmed that the Arkham series is currently not in development. In an interview with YouTuber BobaTalks, Gunn stated, “That isn’t something that is being developed…right now.”

Q: “Is there any hope for [the ‘Arkham’ series] to be a thing in tyhe future maybe?”

I’m optimistic, but unfortunately, that idea isn’t currently being pursued. It simply didn’t pan out.

So, it turns out those rumors from Variety late last year were true. A source told them back then that this project wasn’t moving forward at DC Studios, and now it’s been confirmed – it’s officially no longer in development. It’s always interesting when inside info pans out, and in this case, it seems Variety was spot on.

The Arkham series was announced soon after The Batman came out in 2022. But when James Gunn became head of DC later that year, plans changed. The series might no longer be connected to The Batman‘s universe and could instead be part of the main DC Universe.

Just because The Penguin is happening doesn’t mean it’s the only TV show we’ll get from the world of Matt Reeves’ The Batman. Producer Dylan Clark revealed in September 2024 that he and Reeves are still working on developing another spin-off series.

The Future of Matt Reeves’ Batman TV Spin-Offs

Although the cancellation of the Arkham series is unfortunate, it doesn’t necessarily mean the end of TV shows connected to The Batman. Considering the popularity and Emmy award win for Penguin, DC Studios should consider developing more TV series within the world created by Matt Reeves.

At this point, it looks like Season 2 of The Penguin is the most likely project to be approved. While the first season was initially presented as a limited series on HBO Max, its positive reception suggests the show could continue with another season.

Whether Colin Farrell’s Penguin will survive the next Batman movie, The Batman 2, remains to be seen.

DC could also consider reviving an older concept that might still work within its superhero stories. Around the time The Penguin series was announced, reports surfaced that DC was looking into a streaming show focused on the Gotham City Police Department, set in the world of The Batman.

Although that project was cancelled, it might be worth revisiting now. The world Reeves created seems ideal for a detective show – think a darker, more mature version of Gotham. If the people in charge at DC are searching for a sure thing, this could be exactly what the franchise needs to succeed.
