Matt Damon’s 1999 Crime Thriller Classic Leaves Netflix In 8 Days – Last Chance To Watch

A great thing about Netflix is its huge collection of classic movies and shows. These titles come from many different eras and cover all sorts of genres, often featuring popular actors. When these well-known films and shows become available on Netflix, whether it’s someone’s first time watching or their hundredth, they quickly become very popular on the platform.

Matt Damon is a familiar face on Netflix, with many of his films becoming popular on the streaming service. He started 2026 strong with the hit crime thriller The Rip, which he starred in with Ben Affleck. From the classic Good Will Hunting to more recent films like Ford v. Ferrari, Damon’s movies consistently rank high on Netflix. However, one of his most acclaimed films is soon leaving the platform.

The Talented Mr. Ripley Is Leaving Netflix On March 13

In 1999, Matt Damon starred in the thriller The Talented Mr. Ripley, playing a young man sent to Italy with the task of convincing another American to return to the United States. However, things weren’t what they appeared to be. The film was a major hit, earning $128.8 million on a $40 million budget and receiving overwhelmingly positive reviews – it currently has an 85% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It was also nominated for five Academy Awards.

Currently, you can watch the Paramount film The Talented Mr. Ripley on Netflix, but it will be leaving the platform soon. Netflix has announced that it will no longer be available starting March 13th, so if you haven’t seen this classic thriller yet, you only have a few days left to watch it.

If you’re like me and loved Damon’s version of The Talented Mr. Ripley, you might find Netflix’s Ripley series a good substitute. But if you really want to watch the original, you can find it on MGM+ until the end of March – just be aware you’ll need a separate subscription to access it.

Why The Talented Mr. Ripley Is Worth Watching

Even though The Talented Mr. Ripley isn’t currently a huge hit on Netflix, you should definitely watch it before it’s no longer available.

Matt Damon is fantastic in this film. The character of Tom Ripley is incredibly complex, and Damon really showcases his acting abilities by portraying both Ripley’s charm and his darker, more desperate side. It’s no surprise he received a Golden Globe nomination – this is one of his strongest performances in a truly excellent movie.

What really makes this film work, beyond Damon, is the incredible supporting cast. Jude Law as Dickie Greenleaf is just captivating – I honestly think it’s the strongest performance in the entire movie, and it’s no wonder he was nominated for an Oscar! Gwyneth Paltrow and Cate Blanchett both really stand out as the women in the story, and Philip Seymour Hoffman’s character, Freddie, is someone you definitely won’t forget. Jack Davenport and Philip Baker Hall are also key players who make the whole thing feel so complete.

Beyond the acting, The Talented Mr. Ripley is a visually stunning film. Its European locations are beautiful and perfectly capture the atmosphere. The actors, including Jude Law and Gwyneth Paltrow, seamlessly embody the elegance of the 1950s high society.

Director Anthony Minghella carefully reveals the story piece by piece. While Tom’s initial search for Dickie suggests one narrative, their developing connection transforms the film into something unexpected. The outcome is both shocking and heartbreaking, creating a truly captivating viewing experience.

It’s best to watch The Talented Mr. Ripley without knowing too much about the plot – that way, you’ll get the biggest emotional impact from the story. You can expect a gripping thriller with a fantastic cast and excellent acting.
