Christopher Nolan’s 2014 space film, Interstellar, really resonated with audiences, according to frequent collaborator Matt Damon, who appeared in the film as Dr. Mann. Interstellar, starring Matthew McConaughey, follows a group of astronauts traveling through a wormhole near Saturn to find a new planet for humanity. Made with a budget of $165 million, the film earned over $773 million worldwide and was often compared to Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey.
While doing publicity for his new Netflix film, The Rip, Damon was asked by Collider which Christopher Nolan movie he liked best. He considered Inception, the dream-heist film starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hardy, and Elliot Page, but ultimately chose Interstellar. Here’s his reasoning:
To be honest, I love all those movies. Specifically, when Interstellar was re-released, I rewatched it and realized I hadn’t really seen it before. I was actually in the movie, even in a small role, and had read the script not long before it came out, so I was too close to it to fully appreciate it the first time around.
Reading the script was a deeply emotional experience – I actually cried. It really resonated with me because it’s about a father regretting missed time with his daughter, and my own children were young at the time. The thought of that happening to me was terrifying, and it profoundly affected me. I felt that same strong emotional connection when I watched the finished film years later; it’s a truly moving story.
Because of the effects of time travel, astronaut Joseph Cooper is gone for about 90 years from Earth during his space mission. This means his son, Tom, passes away before he comes back, and his daughter, Murph, is very old and nearing the end of her life when they finally meet again.

Damon and Nolan are teaming up again for a new movie, this time a full-length IMAX version of Homer’s The Odyssey. They previously worked together on 2023’s Oppenheimer, where Damon played General Leslie Groves. This time, he’ll star as Odysseus, the king of Ithaca, as he struggles to return home to his family after the Trojan War.
