Matt Damon & Kevin Smith’s ‘Dogma’ Is a Streaming Success on Apple Ahead of Sequel

Matt Damon is currently enjoying a string of hits with films like Oppenheimer, Air, and The Rip on Netflix. However, one of his older movies is gaining renewed attention online, especially with a sequel on the way. Damon is famously close with Ben Affleck, and the two first became well-known for co-writing and starring in Good Will Hunting. Beyond that iconic film and their recent collaborations, Affleck and Damon also worked together on a beloved cult classic.

Following the success of Good Will Hunting, Matt Damon and Ben Affleck teamed up again for a Kevin Smith film, Dogma (after first appearing in his 1997 movie Chasing Amy). Released in 1999, Dogma featured a large ensemble cast including Linda Fiorentino, Alan Rickman, Jason Mewes, Salma Hayek, Jason Lee, Chris Rock, Alanis Morissette, and even Smith himself. The film centers on Damon and Affleck playing two fallen angels, Loki and Bartleby, who are determined to get back to heaven, and the unlikely group—including the iconic Jay and Silent Bob—who try to prevent them. Recently, Kevin Smith hinted at a Dogma sequel, which has caused renewed interest in the original film and sent it climbing the charts on streaming platforms.

The movie Dogma isn’t currently available on most streaming services, but you can buy or rent it on platforms like Amazon Prime Video and the Apple TV Store. Recently, fans of director Kevin Smith have been revisiting this classic film on Apple TV, where it’s currently the third most popular movie. Topping the chart is One Battle After Another starring Leonardo DiCaprio, followed by the R-rated thriller The Housemaid with Sydney Sweeney.

Kevin Smith Joined a Protest Against ‘Dogma’

Let me tell you, if you think movie fans get worked up over small details now, you should have seen the fuss back in 1999 when Dogma came out! This film really stirred things up, especially with certain religious groups. Honestly, a movie about a 13th apostle, Loki, Bartleby, a literal poop monster, and Alanis Morissette playing God? Yeah, that was always going to get a reaction. It was a surprisingly controversial film, to say the least!

Okay, so this is a weird story from when my movie, Dogma, came out. Some theaters actually had protesters outside, convinced it was pro-satanic! It was so bizarre, I actually joined one of the protests, just to show how absurd the whole thing was. The kicker? Not a single protester recognized me. It really drove home the point that they hadn’t actually seen the film and didn’t have a clue what it was about!

In an interview with MovieWeb last year, Kevin Smith revealed that Dogma 2 won’t be a direct sequel, but a completely new story with a fresh cast of characters. He did say the original actors are welcome to make cameos, and given this is a Kevin Smith film, it’s likely Ben Affleck and Matt Damon will appear in some capacity.
