The second season of Matlock concluded with a special two-hour episode that resolved the long-running Wellbrexa case, which has been central to Madeline “Matty” Matlock’s journey since the show began. While ending this major storyline was a risk, the season finale successfully set the stage for Matty’s story in season 3, bringing the show back to the core ideas of the reboot.
Kathy Bates’ new take on Matlock isn’t a simple revival like Criminal Minds: Evolution. The show quickly made it clear that the original Matlock, with Andy Griffith, still exists within the same fictional world. Bates’ character honors Griffith’s original while remaining unique. The surprising reveal that Matty Matlock was secretly Madeline Kingston was a clever way to attract viewers, but it also meant the show wasn’t a true reboot. This worked well for the first two seasons, but season three needs to introduce a fresh direction to keep viewers engaged.
According to showrunner Jennie Syder Urman, the upcoming third season of Matlock will have a noticeable change in direction. The new season aims to blend long-running storylines with self-contained legal cases each week, creating a feel similar to the original series while still keeping some of the serialized elements fans enjoyed. While Beau Bridges made a great antagonist, a new story arc for season 3 is a positive development. Even though there will be a wait before the next season airs, the ending of season 2 already suggests a compelling story is in store.
Ending The Wellbrexa Case Allows Matlock Season 3 To Be A Proper Procedural
While Matlock always included investigations with self-contained cases each week, those legal stories often served as a backdrop for Matty’s main plan to expose Senior and his involvement with Wellbrexa. Now that Matty is focused on getting justice for her daughter, these investigations could become more central to the show in season 3.
The show doesn’t need major changes to focus more on its case-of-the-week format. The groundwork is already laid: Olympia has left her old firm with Matty, and they intend to launch a new one. Meanwhile, Edwin is recruiting Belvin and Sarah, ensuring Sarah continues to have compelling storylines now that David Del Rio and his character, Billy, are no longer central to the plot.
After the events of season 2, Julian and Hunter face uncertain futures – Julian is likely going to prison, and Hunter’s job is at risk because of Senior’s arrest, which halted the merger. If Matlock continues with these characters, a smaller, more focused team could allow the show to concentrate more on the legal cases they handle.
Delaying the third season of Matlock until mid-season 2026-2027 might actually be beneficial, despite the wait for viewers. This allows the show to start with the new law firm already established and focus on compelling cases from the beginning.
Even though the show is evolving, it will still have a continuing storyline. According to showrunner Rachel Urman, the extended hiatus is meant to allow for strong foundational planning for season 3, and to carefully develop a new mystery. With Matty’s financial backing, the show Matlock is expected to launch as a traditional procedural series in 2027.
Matlock Shifting To Be A Regular Procedural Can Help Revitalize Its Fanbase
CBS has consistently found success with its crime and investigation shows. Recent data shows that several of their procedural dramas—including Matlock, Marshals, Tracker, CIA, FBI, Sheriff Country, Elsbeth, Boston Blue, and the NCIS franchise—were among the most-watched programs on television and streaming platforms during the 2025-2026 season.
CBS tends to do very well with shows that follow a case-of-the-week format, and Bates’ show could benefit from a ratings increase after Matlock saw a temporary dip in viewership early in its second season. While Matlock started season two strong, averaging 11.7 million viewers in its first week (according to The Wrap), its audience gradually decreased as the season focused on the conflict between Matty and Olympia.
Fortunately, season two wrapped up with Lawrence and Matlock fully united, their only disagreement being the order of their firm’s name. If the show continues to highlight their strong partnership in season three, it has the potential for a great reboot and plenty of exciting storylines.
How The Wellbrexa Fallout Can Still Be Included In Matlock Season 3
The third season of Matlock, set to air in 2027, will have just 13 episodes. This shorter run could limit how thoroughly the show explores the consequences of the Wellbrexa storyline. Matlock is one of four CBS shows—along with Fire Country, NCIS: Origins, and NCIS: Sydney—scheduled to have fewer episodes in the 2026-2027 season. With the show seemingly focusing on individual cases again, a 13-episode season might not allow enough time to fully develop the upcoming trial storyline.
Despite the time jump between seasons 2 and 3, the story of Wellbrexa isn’t completely finished. A case of that size wouldn’t be resolved quickly, which could open the door for Jason Ritter to reprise his role as Julian. It would be a waste to lose such a compelling character after his season 2 finale appearance. Of all the Jacobson Moore employees arrested, Julian seems the most likely to reappear in future episodes.
We don’t yet know the complete cast for season 3 of Matlock, so it’s unclear who will make it through the Wellbrexa storyline. With Jacobson Moore gone, some smaller characters might not return, but fans can hope to see recurring favorites like Shae and Hunter again. Senior, Lester, and Eva could potentially appear as guests if the trial is featured on screen, though they likely won’t be major players in the show’s new direction.
The first two seasons of Matlock are available to stream on Paramount+.
