The first trailer for Masters of the Universe has excited fans and addressed many of their worries. The movie seems to successfully bring the world of Eternia and its iconic characters to life in a live-action format. The cast includes well-known actors like Alison Brie, Morena Baccarin, and Idris Elba, but some viewers were initially unsure about Jared Leto’s portrayal of Skeletor.
The initial trailer impressed many viewers with a striking look at the villain, easing concerns some fans had about Jared Leto’s casting. Those still hesitant can rest assured, according to director Travis Knight, who shared that Leto is a big fan of Skeletor and was eager to deliver a powerful performance. Knight explained this in a recent interview with Empire magazine, stating:
Skeletor was a compelling villain – visually striking, genuinely frightening, and surprisingly humorous. Beneath the surface, he was also a deeply insecure character, and his unique voice was a key part of what made him memorable. We wanted an actor to create their own take on that voice, and Jared came to us because he’s a big fan of Skeletor and already had ideas about how to play him. He was eager to really go all out, and we ultimately created a version of the character I’m very pleased with. In a lot of ways, Skeletor represents the worst aspects of traditional masculinity.
Skeletor has always been a frightening villain, and the director has shared that he secretly struggles with self-doubt beneath his intimidating appearance. Though we’ve only seen brief snippets of Joaquin Phoenix’s portrayal of Skeletor so far, the producers are confident fans will enjoy it. However, Phoenix is a somewhat divisive actor, which could be a hurdle for some viewers.
Jared Leto’s Presence Could Still Hurt ‘Masters of the Universe’

Amazon MGM Studios
While Joaquin Phoenix’s portrayal of Skeletor visually looks great, we haven’t heard him voice the character yet, so a lot of his performance remains to be seen. However, describing the villain as the “embodiment of toxic masculinity” might be problematic given the serious allegations against Phoenix. Several women have accused the actor of sexual misconduct, and considering these accusations and past criticism of his casting, it could negatively impact the Masters of the Universe reboot.

Despite being a fun and exciting movie, Tron: Ares didn’t perform well in theaters, seemingly ending the franchise once again. Many believe Jared Leto’s controversial presence as the lead actor hurt the film, as his casting proved to be a major obstacle for marketing and audience reception. Now, there’s concern that the upcoming Masters of the Universe movie could face a similar fate simply because of its lead actor, and its success will be determined when it’s released in June.
