Marvel’s Wonder Man Trailer Is Delightfully Meta, But What I Really Love Is That A New MCU Bromance Is Brewing

Marvel’s been experimenting with its TV shows since the start of the Multiverse Saga, moving away from the usual formula. Shows like the surreal *WandaVision* and the self-aware *She-Hulk: Attorney at Law* have been particularly different. The upcoming *Wonder Man* looks to continue that trend, and the first trailer shows it will playfully poke fun at Hollywood itself. But beyond that, I’m excited about the potential for a fun new friendship to develop within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Wonder Man Looks Like It’s Going To Skewer The Entertainment Industry In Fun Ways

Marvel fans have seen high school life in the *Spider-Man* movies, political intrigue in the *Captain America* films, and different perspectives on the legal world with *She-Hulk* and *Daredevil: Born Again*. It’s surprising we haven’t really explored the world of Hollywood within the MCU—until now. *Wonder Man* centers on Simon Williams (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II), an actor trying to land the lead role in a reboot of a famous film.

Okay, so that little teaser last week hinted this new Marvel series was going to feel very ‘Hollywood,’ and the full trailer they just dropped at Comic Con really leans into that. We get a great look at Simon navigating the whole actor’s life – the auditions, meetings with his manager, and desperately hoping for a callback. And honestly, seeing Williams doing those acting exercises? It’s hilarious, but also feels super real – I’ve heard similar stories from actual actors over the years. It’s a clever way to show the struggles and funny moments of trying to make it in the business.

If you’re expecting a typical superhero action-fest, this might not be it. I’m really enjoying the show’s funny and satirical tone. However, since it’s part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, we can still anticipate some big action sequences over the eight episodes. I’m looking forward to both the excitement and the show’s take on how Hollywood works, but right now, I’m especially excited about a new pair of characters that I think will be great.

There’s A Friendship In Wonder Man That Has The Potential To Be Very Entertaining

Simon Williams isn’t the only one hoping to land the lead role in the new *Wonder Man* movie, directed by Zlatko Burić. He’ll be competing with Trevor Slattery, the character famously played by Ben Kingsley. Kingsley last appeared as Slattery in the 2021 film *Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings*, and it looks like he’s returned to acting – and is also auditioning for the part of Wonder Man.

Trevor and Simon don’t really seem to be competing with each other; instead, they’re supporting each other, which is great to see. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has a history of strong friendships between characters like Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes, Tony Stark and James Rhodes, and Peter Parker and Ned Leeds. I didn’t anticipate Simon and Trevor becoming close, but the new footage shows their connection is both humorous and heartwarming. I’m excited to watch their relationship grow throughout the series.

Fans are looking forward to *Wonder Man* for several reasons, including the involvement of stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Ben Kingsley, but also because of the talented team working behind the scenes. Destin Daniel Cretton, who directed *Shang-Chi*, is co-creator, director, and executive producer – and has already shown he’s skilled at making compelling superhero movies. The cast also features Demetrius Goose (playing Simon’s brother), Ed Harris, X Mayo, and Arian Moayed.
