Marvel’s Official Iron Man Recast In New Avengers Release Repeats What Robert Downey Jr. Only Did Once

Marvel replaced its actor for Iron Man to explore different versions of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and now, a few years later, that actor is back for a new Avengers movie. Robert Downey Jr. is the actor most people think of when they hear ‘Iron Man’ or ‘Avengers’ – he was the one who launched the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe and really defined what it became.

Robert Downey Jr. is confirmed to star as Doctor Doom in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday. However, there’s been no news about him returning as Tony Stark or any version of Iron Man in that film. Interestingly, Marvel has recently launched a different Avengers project – one that isn’t connected to the main MCU storyline, but does introduce the actor who will officially take over the role of Iron Man.

The MCU’s Iron Man Recast Actor Returns In New Avengers Release

Marvel premiered LEGO Avengers: Strange Tails on Disney+ on November 14th. This two-part show centers around Hawkeye, who must gather a new team of Avengers to battle the original, mind-controlled heroes and the villain pulling the strings. Notably, Mick Wingert returns to voice Iron Man in the series.

Fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe will recognize Ross Marquand as the voice of Tony Stark in the Disney+ series What If…?. Over the show’s three seasons, Marquand voiced various alternate versions of Iron Man, essentially succeeding Robert Downey Jr. in the role. While LEGO Avengers: Strange Tails isn’t part of the official MCU, it also features Marquand as the voice of Iron Man.

In the new Avengers series, Wingert’s Iron Man isn’t controlled against his will like some of the other heroes. He actually teams up with Hawkeye to defeat the series’ villain, Meryet Karim. For their final battle, Iron Man creates one of his strongest suits of armor yet – a suit that was previously only worn once by Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man.

As a huge LEGO and Marvel fan, I was so excited to see Iron Man roll up in the Hulkbuster armor during the final battle in LEGO Avengers: Strange Tails! It totally brought me back to when we first saw Robert Downey Jr. suit up in that massive armor in the MCU’s Avengers: Age of Ultron back in 2015. Seeing Iron Man face off against a mind-controlled Hulk with the Hulkbuster was a really cool nod to that epic fight!

Tony Stark’s Hulkbuster armor let him capture the Hulk during a destructive outburst, which was triggered by Scarlet Witch manipulating his mind. Although the Hulkbuster reappeared later in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it was Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) who piloted it in Avengers: Infinity War. This meant the new Avengers film featured Iron Man using the same suit Robert Downey Jr. had worn previously.
