Marvel’s Next Disney+ Series Is the Perfect Place for a She-Hulk Cameo, But It Probably Won’t Happen

Marvel has a chance to bring back She-Hulk in a future Disney+ series, but it’s unlikely. When Tatiana Maslany first played She-Hulk, she was expected to become a key player in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, potentially appearing in future Avengers movies and beyond. However, after She-Hulk: Attorney at Law received mixed reviews and wasn’t a hit with many viewers, there haven’t been any announcements about the character’s return.

Despite She-Hulk not getting a second season on Disney+ – a fate shared by many Marvel shows on streaming – Marvel Television is continuing with new projects. Next up is Wonder Man, a live-action comedy that satirizes Hollywood. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II will star as Simon Williams, an actor who becomes a superhero.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has experimented with comedy in various ways. We’ve seen it with the legal humor of She-Hulk, the classic sitcom style (with a surprising turn) of WandaVision, the darkly funny Agatha All Along, and now Wonder Man, which promises a satirical take on Hollywood.

As a critic, I’ve been struck by the similarities between She-Hulk and the upcoming Wonder Man. Both shows really lean into the comedic possibilities of what it’s like to have a job – but with the added twist of being a superhero. They’re both satirical comedies that explore their main characters’ professional lives, offering a really fun and unique take on the genre.

Given the parallels between the powers of She-Hulk and Wonder Man, the upcoming Disney+ series seems like a natural fit for Tatiana Maslany to return after not appearing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for three years. However, there could be a complication.

As a movie critic, it really doesn’t surprise me that Jennifer Walters and this up-and-coming actor are connecting. She’s a lawyer based right here in Los Angeles, and he’s working in Hollywood on the set of the Wonder Man remake – it was only a matter of time before their worlds collided!

Throughout its nine episodes, She-Hulk explores various legal areas like copyright issues, product safety, and defending people in criminal cases. It would make sense for the show to add entertainment law, and for She-Hulk to represent Williams, particularly after he gains superpowers and falls into her specialty of superhuman law as Wonder Man.

She-Hulk’s Budget Is Limiting Her MCU Future In a Big Way

Like other costly Disney+ series such as WandaVision and Secret Invasion, She-Hulk is estimated to have cost around $225 million to produce. A major factor in this high cost was the show’s reliance on extensive computer-generated imagery for its main character and other fantastical creatures.

She-Hulk’s high production cost probably means she won’t appear in Wonder Man or most other Disney+ shows in the future. This also clarifies why she wasn’t in Daredevil: Born Again, even though she and Matt Murdock became a couple on her series, and Charlie Cox suggested they might reconnect.

In February 2023, just before filming began on Wonder Man in April, Disney CEO Bob Iger said the company would be cutting costs for shows on Disney+. We’ve definitely seen this happen with Marvel projects recently, like Echo, which reportedly cost only $40 million, and Agatha All Along, which appears to have had an even smaller budget.

When Agatha All Along debuted on Disney+, Brad Winderbaum, head of Marvel Television, told Variety that they intended to “produce these shows economically,” and highlighted how working with smaller budgets could actually spark creativity.

This show is our most budget-friendly one, and that was intentional. We’re aiming to produce these shows responsibly, and keeping costs down actually gives our creative teams more flexibility. For instance, ‘Agatha All Along’ relied heavily on practical effects and used significantly less computer-generated imagery than our previous projects. I think that choice really comes through on screen.

It appears money problems were the main reason She-Hulk wasn’t renewed for a second season. Tatiana Maslany mentioned they “spent their entire budget,” making another season unlikely. With Disney+ now being more careful with its spending on Marvel shows, She-Hulk might only appear in future Marvel movies, or perhaps limited to appearances as Jennifer Walters.

Although money problems might prevent the Walters series from appearing on Disney+ anytime soon, a show on Peacock could be the key to getting a second season of She-Hulk made.

As much as I love She-Hulk, it’s been frustrating that we haven’t seen her make a big splash on the big screen. The issue is Marvel still doesn’t own the movie rights to a full-on Hulk film, and that impacts her appearances too. I’m hoping she’ll show up in Avengers: Doomsday, and honestly, she would have been a great fit in Captain America: Brave New World, but beyond that, it’s hard to see a lot of clear pathways for her right now.
