Marvel TV Producer ‘She-Hulk: Attorney at Law’ Was “A Hit” Despite Toxic Fandom

As a huge MCU fan, I remember when it all started back in 2008! It was so easy to pick a favorite movie or show then, because there weren’t that many options. But now, with so much content – movies, TV series, animated shows – it’s honestly tough to decide what I like best. And it’s not just picking favorites; sometimes it’s hard to even pinpoint which projects didn’t quite hit the mark, you know? A movie might not be a massive success, and it just kind of fades into the background.

Despite a lot of online negativity, Marvel’s Brad Winderbaum says She-Hulk: Attorney at Law was actually successful. Speaking on the Escape Pod podcast (as reported by IGN), Winderbaum said he’d “love to make more She-Hulk,” emphasizing how much he enjoys the character. He admitted that some viewers didn’t react well to the show, but still expressed interest in continuing the series.

Despite some online commentators calling She-Hulk: Attorney at Law a failure, Marvel executive Brad Winderbaum shared that the show actually performed very well – but with a different audience than typical Marvel fans. She-Hulk seemed to appeal to a broader, more general audience who may not be as invested in the details of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. According to Winderbaum, “She-Hulk is one of our best-performing shows. It just connected with a general audience, and there was a difference between how general viewers and fans reacted.”

From the moment it was announced at D23 in 2019, the Disney+ series She-Hulk: Attorney at Law faced negativity online. Like many shows with a female lead, it was targeted with negative reviews before anyone had even seen it. Actress Tatiana Maslany has also been harassed and the subject of false rumors since joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including a completely made-up story about her suing Disney over the film Deadpool & Wolverine (she wasn’t even involved in that movie). The show’s focus on feminist themes also angered some men’s rights activists, who seemed to criticize it more harshly than shows featuring male heroes.

Much of the discussion around She-Hulk: Attorney at Law centered on the criticisms leveled against it, even though the show performed well overall. By the numbers, She-Hulk was a solid success for the MCU, earning an 80% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and reaching number seven on the Nielsen streaming charts – a position Daredevil: Born Again hasn’t even reached. This suggests that what’s said online doesn’t always match how general audiences actually feel about a show or movie.

The future of She-Hulk in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is uncertain. Actress Tatiana Maslany publicly called for people to cancel their Disney+ subscriptions after Disney temporarily suspended Jimmy Kimmel, a move that likely upset studio executives. While she isn’t currently scheduled to appear in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday or Avengers: Secret Wars films, that could still change. With the renewal of Wonder Man for a second season, there’s a possibility She-Hulk could join the cast, as her character also lives in Los Angeles. Even if She-Hulk: Attorney at Law doesn’t get a second season, it’s clear the show wasn’t a failure, despite what some might think.
