Marvel Studios Sets Historic MCU Lineup For Phase 6 & 7 Movie Slate

Marvel’s plans for the rest of Phase 6 and the beginning of Phase 7 of the MCU are unlike anything fans have seen in the franchise’s 18-year history. The upcoming movies include major projects, like a new Spider-Man film and what are expected to be the biggest Avengers movies ever made. A key change with this lineup is how the films will be directed.

In a first for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the next five Marvel Studios films will all be directed by filmmakers who have previously directed a Marvel movie. This trend begins on July 31st with the release of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton. Cretton first joined the MCU by directing 2021’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, and has since also worked as an executive producer and director (on two episodes) for the Wonder Man series.

Marvel Studios has announced that Joe and Anthony Russo, known collectively as the Russo Brothers, will direct the next two Avengers films. These are Avengers: Doomsday, scheduled for release on December 18th of this year, and Avengers: Secret Wars, which will conclude Phase 6 on December 17, 2027. The Russo Brothers are experienced with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, having previously directed Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), Captain America: Civil War (2016), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), and the blockbuster Avengers: Endgame (2019).

Marvel Studios is planning to release Black Panther 3 early in Phase 7 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film will be directed and written by Ryan Coogler, who also helmed the first two Black Panther movies. This makes Coogler only the fourth director to complete a trilogy of films within the MCU.

Marvel Studios has chosen Jake Schreier to direct their first X-Men movie. While the film doesn’t have a release date yet, it’s expected to be part of the early stages of the MCU’s Phase 7. Schreier is already familiar with the MCU, having directed Thunderbolts, which is set to release in 2025 and has received positive reviews.

As a huge Marvel fan, I’m already counting down the days to Avengers: Secret Wars on December 17, 2027! But it’s interesting to note that after that, Marvel Studios has five dates blocked out for future releases, though they haven’t announced what those movies will be yet. It’s all still a mystery, which is exciting!

Marvel’s Strategy for Hiring Directors

For the past 18 years, Marvel’s Cinematic Universe has attracted talented directors. However, only a handful have directed multiple films within the franchise. Although Marvel’s future release schedule is flexible and could change things, it currently looks like they’ve settled on a consistent team of directors for their upcoming movies.

This is good news for both Marvel Studios and its audience. These directors have consistently delivered well-received films, earning positive reviews from both critics and general viewers. The Black Panther films notably won the MCU its first Oscars, the Russo brothers are known for some of the franchise’s best movies, and Cretton and Schreier have quickly become fan favorites with their initial contributions.

While the Marvel Cinematic Universe might not be introducing as many new directors and writers as it used to, the future is still full of possibilities. Currently, only two movies are officially planned after the Multiverse Saga, but more are expected, which will create chances for fresh storytellers to join the MCU.
