Marvel Studios’ 4th X-Men Project Reportedly Revealed

Marvel Studios is planning another X-Men project, continuing to build a collection of stories focused on mutants. For years, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) couldn’t use the X-Men characters because the rights belonged to 20th Century Fox. However, after Disney bought Fox, those characters became available for use in the MCU. We started seeing this happen in 2024 with the release of Deadpool & Wolverine and the X-Men ’97 animated series, which officially brought mutant heroes into the Marvel Studios universe. Since then, Marvel Studios has been fully committed to integrating the X-Men into its films and shows.

Besides the Avengers, the X-Men are one of Marvel Comics’ most famous superhero teams, and fans are excited to see them join the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Marvel Studios appears to be developing this in several ways. According to entertainment insider Daniel RPK, a fourth X-Men-related project is now in development, reportedly an X-Force project, though details are still unknown.

X-Force is a team of super-powered mutants separate from the X-Men, frequently including members like Deadpool and Cable. While the X-Men generally avoid killing, X-Force is known for being more aggressive and willing to use deadly force. A humorous version of the team appeared in the movie Deadpool 2, where Deadpool recruited Domino, Bedlam, Shatterstar, Zeitgeist, Vanisher, and Weasel to fight Cable, but most of them quickly died.

Although it was jokingly featured in Deadpool 2, Fox was seriously developing an X-Force project for a while. It nearly went into production before Disney acquired Fox, but now Marvel Studios appears to be reconsidering the idea.

This might be a return to the idea of an R-rated movie that was discussed when the X-Men films were being made at Fox. Or, it could be the plan for Deadpool 4, which Marvel is currently developing. Reports suggest Ryan Reynolds’ next Deadpool movie will feature a team of heroes, rather than just him. Reynolds has mentioned that another solo Deadpool film doesn’t appeal to him, but he’s open to a project involving a team.

The X-Force project, which Marvel is reportedly working on, is just one of several X-Men-related movies and shows currently being developed.

X-Men ’97 – Seasons 2 & 3

Since Disney acquired Fox, the first official X-Men project from Marvel Studios was the animated series X-Men ’97. This show is a continuation of the beloved X-Men: The Animated Series that originally aired in the 1990s.

The animated series X-Men ’97, which premiered in 2024, was a critical and popular success, currently holding a 99% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Because of its popularity, Marvel quickly renewed the show for a second season, slated for release in 2026, and has confirmed a third season is also planned. There’s even speculation that X-Men ’97 could run for five seasons, potentially providing fans with years of new X-Men stories.

X-Men Movie

With the success of the animated series X-Men ’97, fans are eager to see the X-Men return to live-action films. The familiar X-Men characters from the previous Fox movies will appear in 2026’s Avengers: Doomsday, but this is expected to be their last outing. Marvel Studios is reportedly already working on a complete reboot of the X-Men franchise.

Last year, Jake Schreier, the director of Thunderbolts, was chosen to direct the new X-Men movie. The film is said to feature a completely new cast playing the iconic superhero characters.

For months, rumors have been going around about which actors could play certain mutants in a new X-Men movie, but Marvel hasn’t announced any official casting choices yet.

X-Academy

I’m so excited about everything Marvel Studios is planning with the X-Men, and I’ve heard whispers of a project focusing on the X-Academy! Apparently, they’re thinking of a series based around a younger team of mutants – characters like Anole, Dust, Elixir, and Prodigy, among others. It’s cool because this group actually evolved from the New Mutants in the comics, and they first appeared in the New X-Men series. It sounds like a really fresh take on the team dynamic!

Rumors suggest Marvel is planning multiple X-Men projects in various formats, including a team-up movie, a live-action film, an animated show, and a streaming series, possibly spurred by the news that X-Academy might become a TV series.
