Marvel Studios has shared new footage from Wonder Man, giving fans a preview of the movie within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The released material shows both clips from the fictional film itself and a behind-the-scenes look at how it was created for the series.
Marvel shares in-universe trailer of Wonder Man and behind-the-scenes footage
Marvel Studios dropped a vintage-looking trailer for their upcoming movie, “Wonder Man,” which is set in a fictional 1980s and connected to the recent Disney+ series of the same name.
The movie features actors Brent Willard and Jackie Kay, and is presented as the film that sparked Simon Williams (played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) to become an actor. Marvel also shared some behind-the-scenes looks at the fake movie’s making, including costume designs by Andy Park.
The story centers on Simon, whose adventure starts after watching an 80s superhero and sci-fi movie with his dad. He then tries to win the main role in a new version of the film, directed by the famous Von Kovak (Zlatko Burić). To help him achieve this, Simon teams up with Trevor Slattery (Ben Kingsley), an actor hoping for a career comeback, and together they audition for the remake of the beloved classic.
In the series finale, “Yucca Valley,” Slattery sacrifices himself to cover for Simon after an explosion Simon causes, pretending to be the Mandarin to protect his friend. The episode ends with Simon using his unexplained abilities to free Slattery from the Department of Damage Control.
According to Daniel Richtman, Marvel is nearing a decision to move forward with a second season of Wonder Man. If it’s approved, the show would be the third live-action Marvel series on Disney+ to get renewed, joining Loki and Daredevil: Born Again.
Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Ben Kingsley star in the film. Demetrius Grosse plays Eric Williams, Simon’s brother and a character known as Grim Reaper, while Byron Bowers plays Doorman. Despite rumors, Ed Harris, Bob Odenkirk, and Courteney Cox didn’t make cameo appearances. Josh Gad appears as himself.
Director Destin Daniel Cretton is returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in July with the release of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, a film he also directed. He previously co-created and executive produced the series Wonder Man.
Wonder Man is available to stream exclusively on Disney+.
