After several delays and uncertainty about its release, a Marvel movie is now slated to come out in 2027. The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has made Marvel a hugely popular and well-known brand globally. Even projects outside the main MCU storyline benefit from the Marvel name, giving them an initial advantage. However, that doesn’t guarantee success – some still struggle and may be delayed indefinitely or cancelled altogether.
Writers and producers Chris Miller and Phil Lord recently shared that the animated film Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is now scheduled to come out in 2027. They announced this on the red carpet for their new movie, Project Hail Mary, in an interview with Variety (posted on X). They also said the film will conclude the Spider-Verse trilogy, which began with the 2018 hit Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
The creators confirmed that Beyond the Spider-Verse is still planned for release in 2027. Initially, it was intended as the second half of Across the Spider-Verse, which needed to be divided into two films. The movie was first set to come out in 2024, but production delays caused by the Hollywood strikes pushed the release date back to 2025, and now to 2027.
The film faced another delay, this time until June 2027, because of problems during production. Since then, there haven’t been any significant announcements about its release, and news about the movie has been scarce. This led many fans to speculate about further delays, or even if the film would ever come out, with some believing it had been cancelled without any official word.
With Lord and Miller recently confirming the project is on track, the film is still expected to be released on June 18, 2027. This suggests a premiere next year and that production is now progressing well.
During the interview, Lord and Miller hinted that Beyond the Spider-Verse will be both visually stunning and deeply moving, and they described it as the most emotionally resonant film of the three Spider-Verse movies.
“It’s on schedule, and it’s gonna be beautiful and emotional. The most emotional of the three.”
As a huge fan of the Spider-Verse movies, I’m hearing Lord and Miller are really going all-out to make Beyond the Spider-Verse something special – they want it to be the best it can be. It’s been four years since Across the Spider-Verse hit theaters, which feels like a long wait, though honestly, not as long as the five years we waited between the first Into the Spider-Verse and its sequel!
The key takeaway from Lord and Miller’s statement is that Beyond the Spider-Verse is still on track for release. This should reassure fans about the movie and give them hope that other delayed Marvel films might still come out eventually.
Other Marvel Movies That Have Been Delayed
The delay of Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse isn’t unique among Marvel films. Originally planned for release in 2024, the movie has now been postponed for a total of three years due to multiple delays.
While that’s a significant length, some Marvel films are still longer.
Released in 2021, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings did surprisingly well in theaters, especially considering the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Fans loved the movie and quickly began asking for a follow-up.

Marvel Studios announced a sequel to Shang-Chi, but never set a release date. Destin Daniel Cretton, the director of the first film, was originally scheduled to direct the sequel and also Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. However, after Jonathan Majors was fired, Marvel had to revise its plans for the Avengers movie.
After working on Shang-Chi, Cretton moved on to other projects, which has caused further delays for Shang-Chi 2. With Marvel significantly changing its future plans—replacing The Kang Dynasty with Doomsday—it’s now uncertain if the sequel will ever be made.

The Marvel movie Blade has faced repeated delays. Originally intended to star Mahershala Ali as Eric Brooks – a character briefly heard in Eternals – the film struggled with issues in the script and during pre-production. Now, it appears Blade has been cancelled completely, with sources saying the project is no longer moving forward.

The upcoming MCU project, Armor Wars, has faced numerous setbacks. In fact, it’s the most delayed project in the franchise’s history, with plans for a War Machine-focused story dating back to 2011. Don Cheadle, after taking on the role of James Rhodes in Iron Man 2, initially mentioned that a War Machine movie was being developed.
That initial project didn’t go anywhere, but in 2020, Marvel announced a Disney+ series called Armor Wars. Then, in 2022, the plans changed and it became a movie. Since then, there haven’t been many updates, and it’s unclear if it will ever come out. Rumors suggest Marvel might hold it back until after Secret Wars, potentially meaning a release no sooner than 2028.

Marvel Studios recently changed the release date of a film originally scheduled for February 18, 2028, pushing it back to July 28, 2028 – a delay of about five months. While Marvel hasn’t officially said which movie was affected, sources believe it’s Black Panther 3, meaning that film’s release has also been moved to the later date.

Both Avengers: Doomsday (scheduled for 2026) and Secret Wars (planned for 2027) are major Marvel films, but their development hasn’t been without challenges. Initially, Avengers 5 was titled The Kang Dynasty and intended for release in May 2025. However, it faced delays and is now expected in May 2026.
Originally titled The Kang Dynasty, the movie was renamed Doomsday following Jonathan Majors’ arrest and subsequent firing from Marvel Studios. This led to further delays, pushing the release date to December 2026. Because of the delay to the fifth Avengers film, the release of the sixth Avengers movie has also been moved, now scheduled for December 2027.

Fans have been anticipating the X-Men joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe for years. Discussions about an X-Men movie started around 2019, but the development process has been slowed down by delays related to the Multiverse Saga, meaning it’s taking longer than expected to come to fruition.
