Marvel Makes Major Mistake With New Captain Marvel Miniseries

Although it’s currently unknown if Brie Larson will reprise her role as Captain Marvel in Marvel movies, the character remains a leader of the Avengers in comic books. In fact, Captain Marvel will star in a brand new comic book series launching in 2026. However, Marvel recently made a significant error when announcing details about this new comic.

The upcoming comic series, Captain Marvel: Dark Past, will consist of five issues. It’s written by Paul Jenkins, who also co-created Sentry, and features artwork by Lucas Werneck, known for his work on Storm and Unbreakable X-Men.

The upcoming story centers around Carol Danvers, and will reveal a hidden, troubling past connected to her family, brought to light by a group known as DNVR. This discovery triggers Captain Marvel to remember forgotten events from when she was Ms. Marvel. Adding to the complexity, these events are linked to an investigation Carol had to abandon during her time as a journalist at the Daily Bugle. While the plot promises excitement with its intricate details, it unfortunately suffers from a significant error – a ‘Mighty Marvel Mistake’.

What is Marvel’s big mistake with Captain Marvel: Dark Past?

Marvel has revealed the cover art for the first issue of “Captain Marvel: Dark Past,” created by Lucas Werneck. The image shows Carol Danvers, as Captain Marvel, flying with a younger version of herself. This younger Carol is wearing her classic Ms. Marvel and Warbird costume – a leotard, gloves, and boots – but her emblem is shown mirrored.

Ms. Marvel’s logo has always been a lightning bolt shaped like an ‘S’. This design choice was originally meant to highlight her position as a strong female character – emphasizing that she was ‘Ms.’ Marvel, not ‘Miss’ Marvel. When Carol Danvers became Captain Marvel, Kamala Khan continued using the same emblem after becoming the new Ms. Marvel.

It’s hard to understand how such a significant error made it into the final printed version. The mistake is especially noticeable because the incorrect image was used within the title itself, replacing the letter ‘S’ in the word ‘past.’ A likely cause is that the artwork was flipped horizontally at some point before the text was added to the cover. Regardless of how it happened, this is a major error by Marvel Comics.

Captain Marvel: Dark Past #1 (of 5) arrives in comic shops everywhere on April 1, 2026.
