But when it comes to creating a rich and detailed world, the comics consistently surpass the movies. That’s where Marvel truly excels – in its world-building.

Marvel Has Built A Living World From A Civilian’s Perspective

If you read Marvel comics, you’ll quickly notice most stories happen on the same Earth, at the same time. When a story doesn’t take place in that main setting, it will clearly state when and where it’s happening, but it’s still understood to be part of the larger Marvel Multiverse. This creates a connected feeling for readers – even while one hero is dealing with personal problems and a villain, you know other characters, like Emma Frost, are also pursuing their own stories elsewhere.

All these storylines are connected, forming a shared universe that Marvel’s movies actually borrowed from. It’s exciting to realize many of these stories happen at the same time, and we can expect characters to start crossing over into each other’s worlds soon. Of course, things aren’t always perfectly consistent. Editors sometimes have to make choices to try and keep everything flowing together, so you might notice small differences – like what Wolverine is doing in his solo adventures not quite matching up with his role in the X-Men. Still, this ongoing, interconnected story is what keeps readers engaged.

Plus, many ordinary people regularly benefit from the actions of heroes like Moon Knight and She-Hulk, reinforcing those connections. This focus on a shared world is what truly sets the comics apart.

Stories need to fully explore what it’s like for ordinary people living in a world with superheroes – not just show the action from the ground looking up. It’s about capturing the confusion and strangeness of a world where the normal rules don’t apply. She-Hulk tried to do this by focusing on the legal side of dealing with superpowered individuals, like in the episode featuring Mr. Immortal. Small details and references, such as the first look at Steve Rogers: The Musical, add richness to the universe and feel like a natural consequence of a hero becoming a cultural icon.

We need to see much more connection and depth within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. To truly feel like the comics, the MCU needs to build a more believable and interconnected world. Marvel Comics excels at creating a rich backdrop for everyday stories and makes it feel like anything is possible, but the MCU currently lacks that foundation. Often, the MCU’s world-building feels superficial, with movies and shows rarely acknowledging each other. The slow global reaction to the appearance of the Celestial, for instance, was a major oversight.

It’s challenging to keep all the details consistent in the comics, and timelines sometimes get messy. However, the stories always feel like they happen in a shared, believable world – a world fundamentally changed by the existence of superpowered individuals. The Marvel Cinematic Universe, at this point, doesn’t quite achieve that same feeling. While continuity isn’t perfect, the bigger issue is that different shows and movies, like Daredevil: Born Again and Shang-Chi, feel disconnected from each other. To fix this, the MCU needs to focus on showing how ordinary people experience this world and how their lives have been affected by these changes.
