Martin Scorsese has praised the new Netflix adaptation of Frankenstein. Directed by Guillermo del Toro, known for films like Pan’s Labyrinth and The Shape of Water, the 2025 series is a visually impressive and compelling reimagining of Mary Shelley’s story. Oscar Isaac stars as Dr. Frankenstein, and Jacob Elordi plays The Monster.
Martin Scorsese is another highly respected director (with a longer career), famous for grand crime films like Taxi Driver, Goodfellas, The Wolf of Wall Street, and The Irishman. He won an Academy Award for directing The Departed in 2007, and a positive review from him is a huge boost for any new movie.
I recently caught a fascinating conversation with Martin Scorsese, Guillermo del Toro, Oscar Isaac, Jacob Elordi, and the brilliant designers Tamara Deverell and Kate Hawley, all talking about their work on Frankenstein. And Scorsese revealed something amazing – he actually dreamed about the film! He described it as a truly remarkable piece, one that really sticks with you long after the credits roll. He called it deeply moving, a real achievement, and even compared it to grand opera. It’s clear this film had a profound impact on him.
Lots of people share Scorsese’s view that Frankenstein is a powerful and impressive take on the classic story. This film has clearly had a big impact on del Toro’s work, influencing movies like The Shape of Water and Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio. In fact, Frankenstein feels like the culmination of everything del Toro has been building towards throughout his career – it’s a project he’s been passionate about for years.
The film Frankenstein features Mia Goth, Christoph Waltz, Charles Dance, and Ralph Ineson. It will first be shown at the Venice International Film Festival in August 2025, then released in theaters on October 17th to qualify for awards, and will be available to stream on Netflix worldwide starting November 7th.
Many awards experts now believe Netflix’s Frankenstein has a strong chance of being nominated for Best Picture at the 2026 Oscars, making it the streaming service’s leading contender this season. While Jacob Elordi could be nominated for Best Supporting Actor, his chances aren’t as solid as those of Sean Penn (One Battle After Another), Stellan Skarsgård (Sentimental Value), or Paul Mescal (Hamnet). Frankenstein is considered a near certainty to receive nominations for Best Production Design and Best Costume Design as well.
The film Frankenstein has already received significant awards attention with five Golden Globe nominations, including for Best Motion Picture – Drama and Best Director. It’s also proven very popular with viewers on Netflix. Now, with Martin Scorsese publicly supporting the film, its chances of winning awards, starting with the Golden Globes and continuing through the Oscars, could get even better.
