Marshals: Yellowstone Spinoffs Connect Kayce and Beth’s Stories

Taylor Sheridan cleverly connected two of his Yellowstone spin-off shows with a line of dialogue in the new series featuring Kayce Dutton, now airing on CBS. While the original Yellowstone concluded with its fifth season – a season that sparked a lot of debate – the story isn’t over. Luke Grimes is back as Kayce, this time working with a team of US Marshals in the new spin-off.

The story will continue in a new drama coming to Paramount+, currently called The Dutton Ranch, which will center around Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) and Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser). Together with the ongoing series, these shows are essentially acting as a continuation of what would have been Yellowstone Season 6. This connection is hinted at in Marshals, where a line officially links Kayce’s storyline to his sister Beth’s work.

Yellowstone’s Missing Season 6 Explained

Let me tell you, everyone was buzzing about whether Yellowstone would get a Season 6. The back half of Season 5 wasn’t billed as the end, but honestly, the finale felt like a true ending. Seeing Kayce finally sell the Dutton Ranch? That felt pretty definitive, and left me feeling like the original series had run its course.

Kayce decided to give the land back to the Broken Rock Tribe because of his father’s death. John’s murder created complications with the ranch’s ownership that Kayce had to resolve. After reaching an agreement, Kayce moved to East Camp, and his sister, Beth, also stayed in Montana, starting a ranch with Rip Wheeler and Carter.

Christina Voros, an executive producer on Yellowstone, explained that the plan all along was for John Dutton to die, which would allow his son, Kayce, to inherit the Yellowstone Ranch. However, Kevin Costner’s departure likely caused the show to end sooner than originally intended, ultimately leading to the cancellation of Season 6.

Even though Yellowstone finished with Season 5, fulfilling Taylor Sheridan’s original plan, many wondered if the show itself would continue. Instead of more seasons with the main characters, the story is now being expanded through new spinoff shows. One possibility that was considered was following Kayce and Beth as they began building their lives anew.

How Marshals Revives Yellowstone Season 6

Instead of following Kayce and Beth’s storylines at the same time, like the original Yellowstone series did, each sibling got their own spinoff show. Paramount+ revealed plans for Beth’s show before the final episode of Yellowstone aired. Six months later, CBS announced that Kayce’s story would continue in a show called Marshals. However, it wasn’t confirmed whether the two spinoffs would connect to each other.

The story shows how Kayce’s life away from Bozeman connects to the events happening with Beth and Rip at the Dutton Ranch. While Kayce settles into his new job in a remote area nicknamed the “Zone of Death,” his son, Tate, wonders who will manage the East Camp ranch. Kayce explains that Rip has hired some ranch hands to take care of it.

If you’re new to the show Yellowstone, you might have missed a subtle reference to a beloved character. But longtime viewers would immediately recognize it as a nod to Rip Wheeler, John Dutton’s loyal ranch hand. Rip eventually married Beth Dutton and became part of the family, after John treated him like a son for many years.

As a big fan of both shows, I was really excited to see confirmation that they definitely exist in the same universe! It sounds like the new CBS spinoff is aware of everything that’s already happening with Kayce and a few other characters, which is awesome. It’s basically hinting that we might see some crossovers down the line, and Marshals seems like the perfect way to make that happen. I’m really hoping they go for it!

This brief mention suggests the worlds of the Dutton family will remain connected, officially confirming some storylines will overlap between the shows Marshals and The Dutton Ranch. This opens the door for more crossovers and continued expansion of the franchise’s detailed story.

Now that Rip has been mentioned on the show, the creator of Marshals, Spencer Hudnut, revealed that some characters from the Yellowstone world will appear this season. He specifically hinted at Beth and Rip, mentioning that Kayce still has family members – a sister and brother-in-law – who could show up in the future.
