The action movie Shooter, released in 2007, is now a hit on Paramount+. Despite mixed reviews, it recently made the platform’s list of the ten most popular films.
As of January 29th, the film Shooter has entered the top 10 most popular movies on the streaming service in the United States, landing in 10th place. It follows The Running Man, which was previously the service’s most successful movie in the US. Shooter has also done well internationally, ranking as the third most popular film on the streaming service in France.
The film Shooter, based on Stephen Hunter’s 1993 novel Point of Impact, features Mark Wahlberg as Bob Lee Swagger, a retired Marine sniper. He’s drawn back into action when he uncovers a conspiracy to harm the President, but is then wrongly accused of attempting to assassinate him. Directed by Antoine Fuqua and starring a strong supporting cast including Michael Peña, Danny Glover, and Kate Mara, the movie was a hit with audiences, earning $95.7 million despite a $61 million production budget.
I really enjoyed Shooter, and it seems like a lot of other fans did too – it has a great score on Rotten Tomatoes from regular moviegoers! But, unfortunately, professional critics weren’t as impressed. While some of them acknowledged it was a fun, old-school action movie, others thought the story was weak, the political angles were odd, and even Mark Wahlberg’s performance wasn’t up to par. It’s a shame, because I thought it delivered exactly what you’d expect from an action flick.
Playing Bob Lee Swagger In Shooter Was Particularly Challenging for Mark Wahlberg
Mark Wahlberg said that even though he’s used to physically demanding roles, becoming Bob was still challenging. He jokingly told blackfilm.com that he enjoys pushing himself physically, even when it leaves him exhausted after a couple weeks of filming – it’s what he finds most rewarding about his work.
He explained that he loves roles that demand intense mental and physical preparation, allowing him to fully immerse himself and shut out all distractions until the project is finished. He wants to be able to complete the work and then move on without revisiting it.
I was really impressed to learn how much Mark Wahlberg committed to this role! He didn’t just rely on his experience with action movies; he actually went through sniper training to make his shooting feel authentic. It wasn’t just about looking the part, though – it really helped him understand the character on a deeper level and influenced how he moved and carried himself.
I’d been in action movies before, but nothing like this,” the actor said. “Training at sniper school and working with a real Marine sniper who consulted on the film was incredibly challenging. I really based the character on him.”
Shooter is currently available to stream on Paramount+.
