Despite quickly gaining attention, Play Dirty has sharply split opinions among reviewers and viewers. The fast-paced crime thriller currently holds a 53% rating on both the Tomatometer and Popcornmeter at Rotten Tomatoes, indicating a unusual consensus about the quality of this Prime Video release.
Reviewers had mixed reactions to the film. Owen Gleiberman from Variety praised it as “an action-comedy throwback with enough lighthearted violence to be enjoyable,” adding that director Black has successfully established a retro action style. However, Mae Abdulbaki of ScreenRant was less impressed, giving Play Dirty a score of 4/10 and describing it as “messy and drawn-out,” suggesting it could have been much better.
