Mark Wahlberg is known for action films, but he doesn’t often appear in war movies. While he was in 1999’s Three Kings, and arguably Shooter, his most intense war film, Lone Survivor, is a truly harrowing and action-packed story based on real events. Good news for Netflix subscribers – this powerful film is coming to the streaming service soon.
Starting January 1st, you’ll be able to watch Lone Survivor on Netflix. This film, directed by Pete Berg, tells the true story of Marcus Luttrell, a Navy SEAL who was the sole survivor of a dangerous mission in Afghanistan called Operation Red Wings. The mission’s goal was to capture a Taliban leader, but when things went wrong and his team was killed, Luttrell had to fight for his life against overwhelming enemy forces. Here’s what the movie is about:
In 2005, a team of Navy SEALs – Marcus Luttrell, Michael Murphy, Danny Dietz, and Matthew “Axe” Axelson – were sent to Afghanistan on a dangerous mission: to scout the area and eliminate Taliban leader Ahmad Shah. After encountering local goat herders, the SEALs made the difficult decision to let them go. Unfortunately, one of the herders warned the Taliban, leading to a brutal fight where the outnumbered and outmatched SEALs struggled for survival.
The film featured Mark Wahlberg, Taylor Kitsch, Emile Hirsch, and Liam Ludwig, along with Eric Bana, Ben Foster, and Dan Bilzerian. Peter Berg co-wrote the screenplay with Marcus Luttrell and Patrick Robinson. Lone Survivor performed reasonably well in theaters, earning $154 million globally and receiving a 75% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Notably, audiences liked it even more than critics, giving it an 87% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes. One user described it as “a great and dark display of the brutal realities of war,” and another commented similarly.
This movie is incredibly immersive – you really feel like you’re experiencing every intense, exhausting moment alongside the characters.
‘Lone Survivor’s Marketing Ruined the Movie

Universal Pictures
I recently watched Lone Survivor, and while the title gives you a general idea of what it’s about, the film does a fantastic job of keeping you guessing. You genuinely don’t know which of the four Navy SEALs will make it out alive – at least, if you go in not knowing the true story. Honestly, I think the movie would have been even more thrilling if the trailers and marketing had been a little more mysterious and avoided revealing so much. It would have kept that suspense going right up to the end!
People who went to see Lone Survivor in theaters probably guessed Mark Wahlberg’s character would live, given his prominent image on the posters. Even without that surprise, it’s still a good movie. However, a disconnect between the film’s editor and marketing team likely hurt its performance in theaters and how enjoyable it was for first-time viewers.
