Be warned, this article reveals details about the plot of the new show Task. Mark Ruffalo, known for his role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is receiving praise for his performance in the HBO Max crime miniseries Task. He plays FBI agent Tom Brandis alongside Tom Pelphrey (from Ozark), and the series was created by Brad Ingelsby, who also created Mare of Easttown. Ruffalo and Pelphrey deliver fantastic performances as characters who are adversaries. Though they share only a few minutes of screen time, those scenes are incredibly well-acted and written. Ruffalo revealed that a specific technique was used to create the right atmosphere – a method similar to one director Michael Mann used on the set of Collateral, where he kept Ruffalo separated from the actor playing his opponent.
The season finale of Task aired this past Sunday, ending with a suspenseful and emotional climax for Brandis, played by Ruffalo. Though Robbie Prendergrast, portrayed by Pelphrey, died in the episode before, his earlier actions proved crucial to how the season concluded.
Mark Ruffalo and showrunner Dan Ingelsby recently discussed the series with Deadline, revealing that HBO initially wasn’t sure if they could cast Ruffalo. Luckily, the script eventually won him over. Ruffalo strongly believes the show wouldn’t be the same without actor Michael Pelphrey, saying he was a crucial part of the project. He also described Pelphrey’s deliberate distance during filming, recalling how Pelphrey would avoid interacting with him. This reminded Ruffalo of an experience on the set of Collateral, where director Michael Mann had asked him to leave after Ruffalo tried to meet Tom Cruise privately.
Michael Mann is known for a similar approach to directing. While filming Collateral, I went to say hello to Tom Cruise on set and Mann immediately had me removed – I was literally escorted out. He did the same thing on the set of Heat, keeping Al Pacino and Robert De Niro separated throughout filming to maintain tension.
‘Collateral’: Michael Mann’s Modern Masterpiece With an A-List Cast

Paramount
Michael Mann’s film Collateral is often overlooked, despite strong performances from a talented cast. Mark Ruffalo delivers a memorable, early performance, showcasing his skills as his career was taking off – the same year he became known for the romantic comedy 13 Going on 30. However, Collateral truly highlighted Tom Cruise and Jamie Foxx, with Foxx also receiving an Academy Award for his leading role in Ray that same year.
The film is a thrilling ride where Jamie Foxx plays Max, a cab driver facing the worst night of his life. While Foxx received an Academy Award nomination for his performance, Tom Cruise’s portrayal of the cold-blooded killer is what most viewers remember.
This is a rare role for Tom Cruise, who typically plays the hero (though he was also compelling as a villain in Interview With the Vampire). He shows off his acting ability by portraying a calculating and ruthless killer – a far cry from his usual on-screen image. This assassin is definitely someone you wouldn’t want to cross, either as an enemy or a client.
