Mark Hamill Plays The Villain In The SpongeBob Movie, And It’s Easily His Best Villainous Performance In Years

Many people my age first got to know Mark Hamill through Star Wars, but I discovered him through Batman: The Animated Series. I always thought his portrayal of the Joker in that classic cartoon was the best, and it was how I first appreciated his voice acting. Now, I’ve added another fantastic performance to that list: he voiced The Flying Dutchman in The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants.

I managed to avoid all spoilers before seeing the new 2025 movie, so I had no idea Mark Hamill was playing the villain – a ghostly pirate trying to fool SpongeBob! It turned out to be one of the funniest kids’ movies I’ve seen all year, and Hamill was fantastic as the bad guy – easily his best villain performance in a long time. Let me tell you what happened…

Mark Hamill’s Take On The Flying Dutchman Was Out Of This World

I recently heard Mark Hamill talk about how much he enjoyed voicing the Flying Dutchman in the new SpongeBob movie – he took over the role from Brian Doyle Murray. It totally explains why his performance is so fantastic! Seriously, it’s one of the funniest and most surprisingly great things I’ve heard all year.

Plankton is consistently hilarious, whether he’s attempting elaborate schemes to swap places with SpongeBob after some incredibly complicated task, or simply being unpleasant to his ghostly pirate crew. You can really feel Mark Hamill enjoying the role, which makes his performance even funnier.

The Performance Is Up There With His Joker From Batman: The Animated Series

I really appreciate Mark Hamill’s recent work, especially his performances in the 2025 Stephen King adaptations. However, his portrayal of the Flying Dutchman truly stood out – it’s easily one of his best performances in years. I’d even compare it to his iconic take on the Joker, a role he’s brilliantly played for over three decades. His vocal delivery, the personality he brings to the character, and the sheer joy he conveys are remarkable.

Unlike villains who commit grand heists or torment heroes with psychological games, SpongeBob’s antagonist is delightfully mischievous, clever, and fun to watch. A movie, particularly one focused on a hero’s adventure, relies heavily on a strong villain, and the Flying Dutchman, as voiced by Hamill, perfectly fulfills that role.

One of the funniest parts of the movie happens near the end, when Mark Hamill dresses up as the Flying Dutchman. It’s a wonderfully bizarre and hilarious scene – unlike the awkward live-action moments in The Plankton Movie, it feels like a live-action Scooby-Doo chase, and the whole audience was laughing.

Check out The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants! It’s a fun movie to enjoy with your kids, and it even includes a surprising appearance by the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Chrome Alone 2 – Lost in New Jersey. Plus, you’ll get to see a fantastic performance by Mark Hamill – many consider it one of his best.
