Mark Hamill now refers to Luke Skywalker’s ending in Star Wars: The Last Jedi as a “good way to wrap up” his time with the character. This is a change from his previous public criticism of how the film depicted the legendary Jedi.
Mark Hamill recently told CBS Mornings he doesn’t think he’ll ever reprise his role as Luke Skywalker. He feels the character’s story has reached a natural conclusion and should stay that way.

Mark Hamill feels his time as Luke Skywalker has come to an end. He explained that Luke’s involvement in the sequel trilogy was minimal, primarily limited to his role in The Last Jedi, and that his character’s story was effectively concluded there.
Hamill playfully described Luke’s death as an “overdose of the Force,” ultimately suggesting it was a fitting and respectful end for the character.
Hamill explained he felt it was the perfect moment to move on from the franchise. He believed a graceful departure is just as important as a memorable introduction, ensuring the ending feels dignified.

These remarks are quite different from Mark Hamill’s previous, public disapproval of Rian Johnson’s choices for the character of Luke Skywalker.
Hamill Previously Rejected Rian Johnson’s Vision for Luke
Leading up to and after the release of The Last Jedi, Mark Hamill often voiced his disappointment with the way his character, Luke Skywalker, was portrayed in the film.
Hamill once explained that he had to consciously distinguish the version of the character he was currently portraying from the Luke Skywalker fans remembered from the first three films.

It was so wild getting back into the role of Luke! Honestly, at times it felt like I was playing a different character altogether – like maybe this was Jake Skywalker, a new version, and not my Luke Skywalker. It was a really strange, but interesting, feeling.
The comment quickly captured how disappointed fans were with the movie, and many pointed to it as proof that even the original actor for Luke Skywalker didn’t feel like the character in the film was truly him.
“I Fundamentally Disagree With Virtually Everything”
Hamill recounted a direct discussion with Johnson about how Luke was portrayed in the script.
In a recent interview, Mark Hamill revealed he strongly disagreed with the direction the filmmakers took his character, telling director Rian Johnson, ‘I fundamentally disagree with virtually everything you’ve decided about my character.’

Hamill also shared that he told Johnson he strongly disagreed with all of the creative decisions made for the character.
Although Mark Hamill felt professionally obligated to play the part as written, his remarks clearly showed his strong disapproval of the film’s creative choices.
Hamill Later Attempted to Walk Back the Criticism
After facing criticism and widespread attention to his comments, Hamill stated he regretted making his creative differences public. He explained that disagreements are normal in filmmaking, but usually handled privately.

Despite his later comments, Hamill never took back what he actually said about the portrayal of Luke Skywalker. He didn’t say he was quoted incorrectly or that people misinterpreted him, and he didn’t change his opinion about the character. He only regretted making his concerns public, not the concerns themselves.
A Noticeable Shift in Tone
Mark Hamill recently called Luke Skywalker’s ending “a nice exit,” which is a change from his previous comments where he strongly disagreed with how the character was portrayed by director Rian Johnson.
As a lifelong Star Wars fan, it’s interesting to hear Mark Hamill reflecting on The Last Jedi now, years after it really divided people. It feels like Disney is still figuring things out with Star Wars movies and how to handle our favorite characters from the past. Since Luke Skywalker’s story is already done, Hamill’s comments don’t feel like they’ll cause much trouble, but they do show how opinions on that movie have changed – and gotten a little more forgiving – over the years.

It’s unclear if Mark Hamill truly changed his mind, or if he’s just trying to move past the debate, but his stance on Luke Skywalker’s ending in The Last Jedi has shifted. He previously voiced disapproval of the direction his character took, but now describes that same ending as a good way to conclude the story.
