Mario and Luigi are looking great in the first look at their new power-ups for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. The Mario series is famous for its iconic designs, and especially for the power-ups that transform Mario and his friends, giving them special abilities. These helpful items, often found in question blocks, are a signature part of the games.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie has successfully adapted many iconic power-ups from the Mario games for the big screen. The first film featured popular forms like Super Mario, Star Mario, and Tanooki Mario. However, one classic transformation – Fire Flower Mario – wasn’t included in the 2023 hit movie.
Nintendo and Illumination Entertainment are giving fans what they want in the next Super Mario movie. Nintendo recently shared a sneak peek of Fire Mario and Fire Luigi as part of a promotional stream for a new Super Mario Galaxy Movie Direct.

The first look at The Super Mario Bros. Movie features Chris Pratt as Mario and Charlie Day as Luigi, transformed with the white Fire Flower power-up and holding fiery fireballs.

The Fire Flower power-up first appeared in the original Super Mario Bros., released for the Nintendo Entertainment System (called the Famicom in Japan) in September 1985. It has been featured in almost every main Mario platforming game since then, both in 2D and 3D, with the exceptions of Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Land.

The Fire Flower appeared in the first movie, used by Donkey Kong (Seth Rogen). But in this new film, Mario and Luigi didn’t use it themselves, choosing other power-ups instead.

The new trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie gave fans a complete view of Mario and Luigi using the Fire Flower power-up. In one scene, the brothers explore a pyramid in the Tostarena desert – a location from Super Mario Odyssey – and grab Fire Flowers to illuminate their path.

Unlike super mushrooms, which Mario and Luigi eat for power-ups, they simply crush fire flowers to gain the ability to throw fireballs.
The Biggest New Additions to The Super Mario Galaxy Movie
Fans have been waiting a long time to see Fire Flower Mario on the big screen, and it’s finally happening! But the popular Mario power-up isn’t the only new thing coming in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.
The new movie will feature a wider range of characters from the Mario universe. While The Super Mario Bros. Movie introduced the main heroes and villains like Mario, Luigi, Peach, Bowser, and Donkey Kong, the upcoming Galaxy film will expand on that foundation and introduce even more characters from the games.
The film has announced Brie Larson will play Princess Rosalina, a character who travels through space, and Benny Safdie will voice Bowser Jr. These two characters are major additions to the movie’s already vibrant cast.
Look, everyone was buzzing about Rosalina and Kid Koopa joining the Mario Kart roster, and Nintendo definitely heard us. They’ve made it clear that those two aren’t the only new faces we’ll be seeing – they promised more characters are coming down the line, though they’re keeping those reveals for later. It’s a smart move, building anticipation and keeping us guessing!
More details about the characters and voice actors in ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’ will be shared soon.
Chris Pratt, who stars in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, recently told GamesRadar+ that more characters from the video games will appear in the film, but he isn’t permitted to reveal who they are.
Yes, there are some amazing characters! I can’t reveal who they all are just yet, but you’ve already seen Rosalina and Bowser Jr. in the trailer. There are a couple of other surprises we haven’t shown off yet that I think fans will be really happy about.
Besides the characters, the Super Mario Galaxy Movie could include many hidden extras like power-ups, different levels, and musical surprises.
